What's the deal with upscaling then? Can i upscale my Saturn with a simple box? Will it work with other consoles like my PC Engine too?
The cable from my JP Saturn has the usual RCA jacks, can I buy a box to upscale the video? What's the best option?
Thanks!

upscaling is where the normal 240p signal is converted into 720p/1080p so the modern HDTV can understand and display. it's not, however, magic device that somehow making the ordinary uninspiring composite to the vibrant high definition visual - well there's something similar but you are looking at 8 times of Saturn console itself for one. get the RGB Scart Euro cable for Saturn and also RGB Scart->HDMI converter from Amazon. The output from HDMI is pretty good for the money - well no comparing to the far more expensive route but there's no comparison when the cost is factored in.

Whatever you choose, the first step is to make sure the HDTV (or monitor) you're planning to use is as fast as possible. Ideally ,input lag of 30ms or less.
You also need an RGB cable (preferably SCART) for the Saturn absolutely no question whatsoever.
I'd also still recommend the Framemeister for the saturn. There's quite a bit of 480i content for the system, namely any of the major 3D fighters, and the framemeister handles it outstandingly well.

The FMs slow 240p to 480i transitions render a lot of those games very frustrating to play though.

Other than watching the Fighter's Megamix credit roll (which is basically not possible). I can't think of a 3D fighter where it impacts actual gameplay. The delay is also largely dependent on your display. Using the 240p test suite resolution switch timer with the framemeister, my TV is a consistent 2.4 seconds. As shown in the video you posted, the OSSC isn't exactly immune from this either and also causes a HDMI resync. And given that the framemeister is much more suited for 480i content, the extra second or two is a worthy trade off.

Thanks for the info, I'll sort out the RGB cable first and look into the FM.

I have never ever seen a FM switch anywhere near that quickly. Do you have output frame lock off?
It's particularly annoying in Virtua Fighter for instance, since character select is in 240p. I find this annoying enough with the OSSC and unplayable with FM.

So I guess it's more like 5 seconds and some change.

Get a half decent CRT and use that. Even with composite video, it'll look better than a modern TV with RGB - even if you use an XRGB to upscale it.

personally I'd rather spend the money on games I'm after than FM. Sure it's fantastic piece of gear but its price point is way too high for me. I have absolutely no issue with playing my Saturn on my 21" Dell PC monitor via HDMI using RGB Scart cable. And cost me 1/6 of FM

You can also have that nauseating 480i flicker. I'll enjoy my games looking more like 480P, thanks.

Let's see, $3.99 for a used CRT vs hundreds on scaling equipment.
I'll take the cheap CRT.
