Not really, especially if you stick to 576p output. I'd imagine most people play way more 60hz material anyway.
I got pretty decent results with both the Spectrum and C64 but couldn't get scanlines working with PAL machines at 720p or above.

well putting 50/60Hz switch is far simpler compared to the region switch.

As long as your TV tolerates it (modded PAL Saturn is pretty off spec at 60hz).

Speak for yourself, I don't know many gamers in Europe that, once enlightened into the world of 60hz gaming, didn't switch over to playing mostly 60hz titles and just keeping the PAL ones as collectors items. Except on platforms like Amiga of course where many releases were PAL exclusive.

I was under the impression that the Saturn does 50Hz to 60 modding far better, and outputs PAL60 signal (525 lines at 60Hz with 4.43MHz colour). The Megadrive, I know that it outputs an odd signal closer to 59Hz than 60.

What's the new digital standard over there now? are hd signals at 60hz? Yeah it's been that way for a while, pretty much since the HDMI standard come about. HDTVs typically accept both 50hz and 60hz signals, 50hz would still be relevant for SD sources up to 576. Truth be told, i've never really paid much attention to it since the PS3 was released.

Megadrive is worse, but Saturn can trip up some TVs too.

I suppose some folks do but again, if you're going to the expense of buying a Framemeister or similar device you're most likely knowledgeable enough to be playing 60hz games anyway. I doubt the number of retro gamers in Europe that play predominantly in PAL/50hz is anywhere near 95%.
