Initial impressions of OSSC upscaler device with a Saturn

I got a new OLED TV in January this year, and I had honestly been satisfied with the picture overall from my Saturn. I have been using RGB SCART lead on Game mode, with no edits to the default sharpness, contract etc as that introduces lag. Some games with small sprites suffered from stripes, otherwise most games were fine. Itwas a cheap and simple solution. However I had that niggle in my mind, "could it look even better"?
So I have got hold of an OSSC, and set it up earlier today for a trial.
I tested:
- Battle Garegga for a hectic sprite based game
- Thunderforce V for a combo of sprites and polygons
- Panzer Dragoon Zwei for 3D graphics and some FMV
In simple terms, based on using default OSSC settings so far, I'm really pleased with it. It's like going back to my family's old high spec Sony Trinitron in the late 90's; at least as far as my memory serves. Comparing back to standard SCART input, while still perfectly playable that looks greyed out and slightly blurry.
My observations.
Positives:
- It was easy to set up and turn on once I'd located the right cables in my mess of a man drawer.
- The colours are more vibrant and pixels much sharper.
- There is no noticeable lag, perhaps less than my TV's own processor for the SCART input.
- The LCD panel on the front is a nice touch, I can check at a glance whether i'm in 50/60hz mode.
- I like the old school on/off switch and the clicky input select button.
- It's not a cheap throwaway purchase (from £150+ extras) but I feel it is worth it if you can afford it. I funded it by selling off a rare game.
Drawbacks (minor)
- I would have preferred sound to be carried directly to the TV as I use optical out to my hifi, but the standard audio jack output is acceptable. Perhaps some people will prefer the flexibility this provides anyway?
- It was a little awkward to locate it in my TV unit as there are lots of cables going in and out on two sides. I think with some re-organisation I can tidy things up. I also have a very long and fat DVI/ HDMI cable which doesn't help matters.
- It still doesn't make me less terrible at Thunderforce V!!!
Is anyone else using it, how have they found it for the Saturn?
Are there any further tweaks I should be making to the OSSC's settings?
