I have a sony trinitron and when using s-video the screen is black and white but has a sharp goodlooking image. when also inserting the yellow cable I get a distorted colored image, that looks worse than just av cables. I trie4d various av cables and the s-video cable is fine as well. when using rgb the image is great as well. any idea what I could do?

You're trying to use NTSC signals on a PAL set and the colour carrier is getting messed up. There are converters to correct for this but they're somewhat rare now.
Just use RGB?

problem is some consoles don't get higher than rgb like amiga 32, 3do and snes and n64. however I solved the problem. I already use a converter but I didn't know I had to go to a different channel, not the rgb one but while s-video is plugged in there's a new s-video channel. now it works!

Amiga CD32 can be RGB modded (or you can buy a RGB add on), as can N64. SNES outputs RGB natively unless it's a mini/jr then it needs a mod.
