I never really posted these here, but I've been messing around with Cinepak on Saturn for a while and I've found it can actually look pretty good and has some pretty neat features if you take the time to figure out a good balance between bitrate and quality. Basically the short run down is that a lot of games waste the 300KB/s birtrate limit on absurdly high audio quality and framerates which results in very poor quality encodes.
Here are some samples I've encoded showing how decent quality can be with Cinepak:

Version 0.9.2-RC is out. This changes the patch over to use the new SegaSaturnPatcher utility which should make patching easier. segaxtreme.net/resources/grandia-english-patch.67/Changes include the following: - Fixed scripting errors on the Steamer Ship.
- Fixed various minor pointer issues in menus.
- Fixed minor alignment issues in some menus.
- Repurposed Save File Comment to now be the first 10 characters of where you saved.
- Replaced Japanese "This is a Sega Saturn Disc" CD Audio Track with an English equivalent from Burning Rangers.
- Updated to Sega Saturn Patcher format.

Ok, new releases: Disc 1 v0.8.1 (4/21/2020): - Translated remaining untranslated text in battle menu (Auto Icon) Disc 2 v0.8.1 (4/21/2020): - Translated remaining untranslated text in battle menu (Auto Icon) - All voices are now synchronized with the Japanese Audio - Text has been added to in-game cutscenes where it originally wasn't present. - Fixed clock reset bug when Guido left the party. As always please report any bugs or issues. With both discs now at Version 0.8.1 here's what remains to be done: -Fix Text Alignment Issues in the Options Menu -Fix Text Alignment Issues in the Save/Load Menu -Fix Text Alignment for "Ambushed!" and "Your Initiative!" in battles. -Try and find away to get Guido's full name to fit into the Battle Results Screen. -Polish up the Battle Results Screen (Some of the earlier parts look a tad sloppy). -Translate the Credits -Uncensor the Script (Coffee References mostly). -Figure out the FMVs and add subtitles. Patches can be found here: github.com/TrekkiesUnite118/GrandiaTranslation/blob/master/Releases/Disc%201/SS_Grandia_EN_Disc_1_v0.8.1.zipgithub.com/TrekkiesUnite118/GrandiaTranslation/blob/master/Releases/Disc%202/SS_Grandia_EN_Disc2_v0.8.1.zipI'm curious, would it be possible to replace the Japanese audio in the Saturn version with the English audio from the ps1 version of the game? Or is it not possible? To be honest I haven't even really looked into doing that.

Yes, as recommended in the readme file. Try it in Mednafen then. I know that emulator works.

Did anyone managed to apply the patch? Because I can't. I have two copies of this game and when I create the image file following the steps in the readme file, I have only non working files. At least this is what happens with SSF emulator. I want to be sure that the iso file works before I burn it. Did you extract the data tracks using ISO Buster?

that's neat! so one expects there would be some variance to how the games play, then... They do have some changes. Phantasy Star 1 has the option to play in Hiragana or Katakana, where as originally it was only Katakana. Phantasy Star 2 and 3 have the option to play with the original walking speed or with it increased to match Phantasy Star 4. Basically the Saturn isn't powerful enough to emulate the Genesis hardware at full speed. So if you see a Genesis game running on it, it's most likely a port.

ugh sorry I just read the posts properly after I posted mine. My eyesight is getting bad and I'm too lazy to reach for my glasses sometimes so I tend to miss reading the small text on forums... I completed a play through of the Saturn game sometime last year including getting every spell and maxing them up and finding all the stuff hidden in the 3 extra dungeons so I got a little burned out so after that I didn't follow the progress much for this except just reading thoughts and experiences of people testing out your progress. Seems now might be a good time to test out your project but I don't know the best saturn emulator for Mac OS and then I couldn't get a USB X360 controller to work in that Mac environment so I gave up. Other problem is unless I can burn the translated game to disc and get it to run fully on an unmodded Japanese Saturn ? If it's played on an emulator how will we know if the issues that can occur will be from the emulator settings itself and not your work? I still am reading things like players trying out something like Panzer Dragoon Saga on Retroarch and experiencing sound stuttering etc.. Mednafen so far has been proving to be decent with minimal inaccuracies. The only issue is that there's a known issue with the end of Disc 2 screen sometimes hanging up, but there is a workaround for it. I don't know if that can run on MacOS though. For playing on real hardware though you'll need either a mod chip or a Pseudo Saturn cartridge.

btw did you fix the time gate spell for Feena ? The original is level 99 for both wind and water but apparently it was a bug that didn't get corrected and was suppose to be much lower.. Yes, it's now fixed. The requirements are now 18 wind and 18 water, which matches the HD remake.

Super cool that this almost works! For those of us who aren't deep into the rom hack scene, when you say "the games were ported to the Saturn hardware similar to Sonic Jam" what does that mean? Is it something other than emulation they're doing? These aren't emulation at all. Same with Sonic Jam, the Mickey and Donald Collection, etc. These are straight up ports. They reprogrammed these games to run on the Saturn and use it's hardware. The Genesis Roms are only there to act as a medium to contain all of the original game data.
