it definitely does. my official memory cartridge always gets recognized while the 4-1 almost never.

That depends on the cart too, not just the slot. I had numerous memory carts not recognized, while the AR booted fine. I also had MPEG cards not being recognized either.
I just cleaned the pins on all the carts and they all worked fine afterwards.

I have an official UK memory card that reads fine in both my Japanese Saturns, but in the Eu Saturn it recognises the card is inserted but won't read from it or allow it to be formatted. Sometimes it even lets me copy a save to it after formatting on a JP Saturn then won't let me read it in the EU one, but the save is there and useable in the JP consoles. I'd love to know if this is fixable at all.
BTW, the EU console also doesn't recognise either of the Action Replays I own.

it definitely does. my official memory cartridge always gets recognized while the 4-1 almost never. It's was actually the opposite for me. I've had two official bacK up memory carts that wiped themselves and refuse to boot and I've had the same AR 4 in 1 for over 15 years with no issues. You'll do more damage to the cartridge slot by the constant off loading and inserting of different carts which is why 4 in 1 is the way to go in my opinion. Mind you I have the old school EMS AR with comms ports and they're the most reliable. A lot of the new AR cart designs today I hear aren't as reliable as the Ems comms port ones.

the 4 in 1 is definitely not the way to go for me as I've owned at least 4 4-1 carts that all reset themselves and got fucked up. I couldn't be happier since getting an official memory cartridge

In my case almost never remove the cartridge from my system, I just have official memory carts and an action replay 4in1 with the port on top. However now both my Saturns don't recognize carts at all any more.

In the end, what's the best way to preserving the cart slot? Leaving the cart inside or insert only when you really use it?
I never left a cart inside for the fear of widen the saturn cart slot contacts.
I recently got an official Sega backup ram, and I'm impressed that it works at the first try, I always had issues with the likes of ST Key, to the point that I thought the cart slot was faulty.
ST Key always took more than 20-30 times to finally work, and last time it simply failed to work.
CD+ always worked at first try, but I know that the pcb high thickness is not good for the cart slot and I never used again.
Never tried the action reaply, but from what I read, it could be like the ST key, low thickness pcb so you have to find the sweet spot and never move it again, right?

Repeated insertion and removal will surely cause it to wear out sooner than leaving the cartridge in the console.

it would be nice if someone could create an expansion card extender that screwed in place so the extender would take wear and tear maybe with a splitter so two card could be used at once. I would love that person to be me, but no, ZERO skills here. 8p

Yes, it's that poorly made.
And yes it makes no sense.

Repeatedly inserting any cartridge will lead to friction and over time, widening and wearing down the slot. Do be careful with it. It was badly made, though to be fair I'm sure the designers didn't envisage the console being used in 2018! That said I've been lucky so far and not had any slot-related problems. Have had a corrupted official memory cart though.

I have a problem with the cartridge slot not recognising the RAM function of carts, but everything else is fine.
So I can use an official memory card just fine, Action Replay flashed with Pseudo Saturn works fine, and a regular Action Replay works for the storage function but is not recognised by games requiring the RAM function.
I also have a couple of the Capcom official RAM carts which are not recognised, and the King of Fighrers 95 with ROM cart that is not recognised.
Anyone have any ideas? I've searched round the internet for a while but can't find anything that works. Is it possible to replace the cartridge slot with a working one from a dead Saturn?
