I could never get into Nights. I don't know why, it just never clicked with me. I think I expected too much of it from the hype. For me, Dragon Force easily wins this. PDZ is good, but I dunno, doesn't really compare.

Very different games styles here...i love all 3 but my vote was for Dragon Force, simply because is the most similar to a Total War game on Saturn. And i´m a big fan of strategic games like that (Total War, Imperial Glory, Civilization, etc)

I've never understood Dragon Force. The game drops you in the middle of this really dense scenario without giving you much of an idea of what you are supposed to do or how you can succeed and it isn't forgiving. At all. I found that too jaring to get any enjoyment out of it. It seems impressive but I just don't get it. NiGHTS and Panzwer Dragoon II Zwei are two of my favourite Saturn games and I'm really hard pressed to choose between them. On the one hand you have the magical atmosphere of NiGHTS, which is a highly replayable game. The sense of flight is wondeful, the graphics and worlds are beautiful, the soundtrack is sensational, the bosses and worlds are imaginative, the arcade-paced gameplay is addictive, and the simple story is very evocative and touching. On the other hand, you have Panzer Dragoon Zwei, which is a touching story about the bond between a boy and his dragoon. It looks and runs very impressively, the soundtrack is very evocative of the onscreen action, and the gameplay is smooth, addictive, and rewarding. The dragon evolution system, beserk attack, and multiple routes really add to the game too, as do the options in Pandra's Box. And there are moments, such as the first time your dragon takes flight in Episode 2 that are shiver-inducing, really add to the game's cinematic qualities. If I was being objective, NiGHTS would have my vote simply because it's perhaps a better and more replayable package overall, but Zwei holds a special place in my heart, so it just edges out NiGHTS and gets my vote. Hey Tempest..... Do you have the manual? Are you playing the English version? I ask as coming from someone who NEVER played rpgs I found this game simple and straight forward. Once you read the manual of course. Essentially once you understand what beats what the game is a breeze.

I'm Dragon force all the way with this one. I just can not get into nights. I have tried more then once I just don't find it that enjoyable.
Dragon force on the other hand I couldn't put down. I was fully in on this game, loved building army's the tactical side of sending out enough troops to take down new castles but not leaving castles you currently occupy thin. Love the characters, the story line, the battle systems, graphics, just loved it all.
Being someone who doesn't play rpgs I originally thought this game may be initially too overwhelming to learn. Not so, I found it very easy to learn, get into and enjoy.

Dragon Force, is not a rpg game, is a pure strategic game, it include some elements of a rpg (levels for characters and some items you can use) but the gameplay on the map, and the battlefield is pure strategic.

Oh boy, this debate again. No, Dragon Force is not an RPG. Just because you use the same colors and have a mideval fantasy world with magics, it does not make it a "Role Playing Game." This game has more in common with Dynasty Warriors than it does with Shining Force.
Lets look at the core gameplay. You choose different armies to fight against each other, in real time. Depending on the tactics you employ depends on if you beat the enemy. That's the meat of the game. There's no turn taking, no towns, no shops to buy items, no NPCs, very few dialogues, leveling up and items are near superfluous.
They just throw it the tactical RPG pile because they don't know what else to do with it. You know how you can tell if something is an RPG? Take away the RPG elements and see if the game can stand alone without them.

I imagine reading the manual would make it immensely easier to understand but after my playtest, I'm really not interested spending that amount of money on something I didn't enjoy. Perhaps in the distant future. But for now, I'll let the collector's enjoy the game.

Without the manual telling you what beats what it would be a nightmare. I'm sure you would be able to find it online if you're interested in giving it another shot. Great game.

The manual tells you how the rock, paper, scissors mechanics work? What's the point of playing it then? The fun of the game was figuring out which armies to use against which armies. Past that it's just a boring slog.

I agree with Dtss. You definitely need the manual for Dragon Force. You can try and figure it out without it but you'll be banging into a wall of frustration. You may even get a little pleasure out of trying to figure it out for yourself but the reality is you'll be making the game 10xs longer than it should be and wasting pointless time when the manual explains clear as day how to play Dragon Force. You need to know what army beats what army so you can deploy your troops to maximum effect. I can't imagine enjoying Dragon Force without the manual. Definite no, no for me. ChecK gamefaqs for an online manual.
I also still had fun knowing this information. Once you complete it with one character there are others storylines to try out with other characters so tons of replay value there.

I doubt I ever read the manual but I'm not sure. you should still be fine. this isn't morrowind or something that you need an entire faq just to get started.
