Yeah, Mystaria & SW could have been better graphic wise. Weren't both of those released relatively early in the Saturn's life?

Yeah, Mystaria & SW could have been better graphic wise. Weren't both of those released relatively early in the Saturn's life? I believe they were. Well Shining Wisdom was anyway. Not sure about Mystara. I'm playing through Shining Wisdom now and it doesn't appear to be all that bad.

Wisdom was originally meant for the MD iirc. The delays made them move it to the Saturn.

You know, if it weren't for the single digit framerate, Virtual Hydlide would be the best looking fame out of these three. It does look pretty bad. What about the gameplay did you find it enjoyable?

Wisdom was originally meant for the MD iirc. The delays made them move it to the Saturn. I wonder how it would have been received on the Mega drive. I'm enjoying it so far. The hit detection seems a bit off though. I did try Mystaria for about an hour last year and it seemed okay but am yet to go back to it. I think I'll try complete Shining Wisdom first. If only there was a damn map! Some of the open landscape areas are huge and you can easily get lost.

The very first time I tried Wisdom, my dog distracted me and I missed the text telling you how to run. I hate looking at manuals or the net so I couldn't figure it out, lol.
I played something else. When I tried later and saw the text explaining things, I was torn between anger/laughter.

I don't get all the votes for Virtual Hydlide either... Mystaria is far and away the best of these three. The English translation is a little sloppy at points, but otherwise the storyline is a lot deeper than the others, with a lot more character development. The non-linear progression in the mid-game works incredibly well; I wish more RPGs would throw in stuff like that.
Graphically it's quite amazing; it blew my mind when I got the game and discovered that what I saw in the demo were not full motion video cutscenes, but real time spell animations. Virtual Hydlide actually has pretty amazing graphics too, especially for its time, but Shining Wisdom looks horrible.
Mystaria's balance is decidedly weird, but in an interesting way which doesn't let the player get away without employing good strategy. In contrast, Virtual Hydlide and Shining Wisdom often encourage the player to be cheap. Much like the Shining Force games, the battles are set up to be more than just your guys versus their guys, and each one has to be approached differently.
Mystaria isn't an earth-shaking RPG by any means, but it was the most solid RPG the Saturn had up to this point (outside Japan), and certainly stands above the other two on this poll, though I do like Virtual Hydlide.

I think Virtual Hydlide has in recent years gone from a joke to aan almost respected games, yes it's horribly broken and plays like an early beta, but the scale and ambition of what they were trying to do is extremely admirable given the limitations they were dealing with.

Virtual Hydlide is just an unfinished Breath of the Wild if you think about it.

At first I thought the love for Virtual Hydlide was a troll and I'm sure to some extent it is. But to look at it as a whole, they tried so hard and had such a cool idea for the game. They didn't compromise with their vision, they just ran out of time and printed it running at 5 fps. Overall the game has a lot of heart and charm.

Deffo, I think if you look a bit deeper and and take in what they were quite admirably trying to achieve its a lot easier to forgive how broken the game is.

Virtual Hylide is easily the best game of that generation. Nothing even comes close. Definitely a perfect game. People who complain about the sub-5fps frame rate need to have their heads checked. It's all part of the sublime experience.

It's the ambition. The ideas were there. The execution missed the target. It's not a troll. I've talked about it many times in the past, even stating my initial frustration with the game before realizing just how much thought went into it, noting the things that people are noting now about it. I'm glad to see people finally seeing the potential in this game. Also, I've said it many times but I'll say it again here: do not play it on anything less than Hard. The open world aspect of it where you have to figure out where to go and then happening upon a later dungeon first and sneaking around as an underpowered character but still somehow succeeding is really cool. Basically, Hard mode turns off the arrow that leads you the way you need to go, and blanks out the map, forcing you to fill it in by running around. Also it puts a lot more "trapped" items in the game, that do funky things from altering your stats to even making the lighting around your character pitch black, making it more roguelike-esque. Actually... I'd imagine a hardcore mode (no saves, die = restart) playthrough would be really fun!
