Haven't played any of these so again, it's 'Love at first sight' Cyber Speedway looks like an uglier version of Wipeout so I can't vote for it, not keen on Highway 2000 but Formula Karts actually looks pretty decent. I wonder why it's not talked about much on this forum, I might have to check out some of its reviews but it definitley gets my vote as it looks the best.

I haven't played any of these either sych, and I probably never will. I am considering GT 24 as a future purchase, I like the look of that game, and by all accounts, it's actually rather good. There are a few other driving games that interest me on Saturn, power drift, king the spirits and over drivin' gt-r. I will get round to getting them at some point.

Haven't played any of these. Cyber Speedway looks the most appealing. I'd award it the most mis-matched soundtrack on the Saturn! Though I doubt I would ever spend the time to play it given the hundreds of other games ahead of it in the queue.
Maybe I'm getting old but I find the soundtrack on Formula Karts to be awfully stressful.
The problem I have with early racers is that unless I have a nostalgic attachment (e.g. Daytona USA) or it's absolutely perfect to play (Sega Rally) I find them very underwhelming compared to later releases.

Cyber Speedway's US soundtrack falls in the 'so bad it's good' category for me. Easy choice overall, I like the game a lot.

Highway 2000 looks nice and plays at least as well as Cyber Speedway so it gets my vote. Never played Formula Karts.

I apologise for being slightly off-topic here but Formula Karts holds a special place for me. For 2 or so years before this review, I had a constant battle with posting my reviews on reddit. I would post my videos and get hit with a barrage of really nasty comments talking about how I'm trying too hard to be funny, the review was garbage etc. Sometimes I would post one of my reviews and then it would be downvoted off the page within about an hour of me posting it sometimes and I started to wonder why I bothered. But one of the comments which resulted in a PM conversation back and forth about my reviews and vision made me question some pretty big things and the end result of that was my review for Formula Karts. It was brief, (almost?) joke-free and to the point. It was the first review where I got positive feedback from reddit and it started seeing a real positive turn around in not only reddit but anywhere I posted my videos. People started to pay attention to my opinion even if they didn't agree with it. The game itself - haha, pretty bad. The game looks really good. It handles pretty poorly and the track design is not only mostly forgettable, but are super fiddly and make 0 sense with the way the karts steer. I'm not expecting Mario Kart but you can't expect a good experience on tracks that bend a lot with steering that is difficult and frustrating. It feels like one of those games where if you had a parent who went out, spent the £60 (or however much a new game costs in the UK) and bought you "that racing game you were wanting" and you got this, with determination, you'd finish it and get into every nuance the game had to offer because you had nothing else to play. I played it enough to find that the frustration outweighed me sticking around to try and get more out of it. Maybe back in the 90s when I was far harder up for games, this might have been alright.
I have a review for Cyber Speedway coming out soon. But in a nutshell, it was probably a big deal back in its day considering it came out months before the first Wipeout game but there is a reason why Wipeout spawned numerous sequels and we heard nothing after this game was released. I found the whole game to be pretty meh.
Highway 2000 (also known as Wangan Dead Heat in Japan) I reviewed ages ago and consider to be a hidden gem. How it looks when you take a corner is RIDICULOUS. But the graphics are otherwise pretty slick, the OST is VERY reminiscent of 90s racing games and the the car handles really well. It does have a vanilla presentation to it which might put some people off but it was easy to get into and found it fun enough to come back to. I was considering a few months ago getting rid of all the Saturn games I didn't like and only keeping the ones I have either not yet played or the ones I have liked and while I have reneged on that decision, Highway 2000 would definitely be staying as it is still one of the better racing games the Saturn has to offer - for sure. This was my choice out of the 3.

King the Spirits actually got a NA release as High Velocity. It was released under the radar over here but nowadays I think quite a few people consider it a Top 3 racer that made it out of japan. I played High Velocity last year and while it was nice to drive, the games difficulty was pretty brutal and I can see for the die-hards would consider it a pretty good game. I spent a long time just beating the first guy. Certainly not for filthy casuals. lol

I also think alot of people are stunned by how good it looks/plays considering it wasn't done by Sega. Its kind of neat to see find quality games like that fly under the radar. Although when going through my old gaming magazines, High Velocity did receive good reviews upon release. I think it was just tough to stand out in the marketplace against Sega Rally or Daytona. Games made in Japan originally like that one generally were quality. Early on in the US a few of the strong JPN series found their way here only to go under the radar in general. High Velocity being 1 (part of the King the Spirits series). Winning Post (part of a larger series in JPN), Iron Storm (again a series with multiple releases in JPN), and Minnesota Fats Pool (multiple releases as Side Pocket). You can even throw in Dark Legend (fighting game with 2 releases in japan). These 5 didn't get PAL releases that I saw, but it appeared some publishers in the US were experimenting with these popular Japanese series in the West. Sadly they all went pretty much unnoticed back in 1996-97 but certainly are being noticed a bit more now. Glad they exist but I imagine it didn't help get more titles over here.

shame the Kart game seems like a mediocre game, I quite like Kart racing games , it certainly looks quite good, but the track design seems a little .....bland.

I found the whole game to be pretty meh. I don't recall anyone ever mentioning this detail back in the day, but Cyber Speedway (or Gran Chaser, as it was known in Japan) is actually a sequel to the PC title CyberRace, which shares many of the same elements, including ships designed by Syd Mead along with a plot that follows the career of a second generation racer named Shaw, not to mention both games are partly set on Terra. For what it's worth, I love the alternate soundtrack offered in the US version of Cyber Speedway - as the only group known to have ever signed to the Sega Music Group, it's a shame we didn't get to hear more from the Bygone Dogs outside their contributions to the soundtrack of Ghen War, since I actually liked the direction they took. Saying that, the WipEout series embraced the very different rave culture for its overall style and never looked back, though I must confess to preferring the work of Tim "CoLD SToRAGE" Wright over the licensed music heard in PlayStation editions.
