If I was him I'd just sell the rights to the technology to a small electronics manufacturer. Or come to some kind of franchise/ commission arrangement. Surely the joy of inventing and producing his own device has worn off by now. Maybe I'm wrong. The whole thing is already kind of a grey area in terms of legality. If he started mass producing them or sold the technology to a business he'd probably infringe on a number of copyrights.

Is he using copyrighted code or designs in his product? Simply the fact it plays Saturn disc images doesn't make it illegal.

To play Saturn discs it has to mimic the copy protection of the disc which is considered a DMCA violation.

Jeez, I just looked at the Rhea. No way would I attempt installing that. I would fuck up my Saturn for sure.
As for the sale of it, maybe he is just protective of his creation. Not everyone is doing everything for the community. It´s why some people have discs for cancelled games, or lost Dr Who stories or whatever and don´t release them to the public. Some people don´t want thinks available to everyone.
I dunno. He has his reasons, I guess.

That's the only skill required to install one of those. You literally just remove the top the saturn, unplug the CD drive. Plug up the Rhea, and screw the top of the console back down. Whole install can be done in under 10 minutes. Assembling Ikea flat pack furniture is a couple notches ahead on the difficulty scale.

The installation says you need to remove cables, solder, move pins, etc. Plenty of stuff that could potentially brick my console.

The only thing you need to solder is the 50/60hz selector and that's totally optional (better to get a modder to install a toggle switch that you can set yourself or not bother imo). Installation is a breeze.

Oh ok. I thought that was a compulsory part. Fair enough!

To be fair, on model 2s you may need to solder some jumpers because there are 3 different drive models. But you can ask for your unit to be set up in advance so you only need to plug it in.

Before I got a Rhea, I used to use the swap trick. You basically switch out the burnt disc while it's spinning for a real disc so the machine can read the copy protection, then you put the burnt cd back in. I did that for something like 15 years and never killed the laser. It definitely -did- push the system pretty hard to read those CDs. So you would be putting wear and tear on the console.
The Rhea is basically 1 to 1 perfection. I think the load times are better since your system will never skip on a scratched up disc.
