So the April 1997 issue of Sega Saturn Magazine has this very interesting screenshot and accompanying comment: Was Independence Day actually going to have NetLink multiplayer, or did SSM simply misinterpret the menu options in this beta? "Network" could mean Link Cable multiplayer, which unless I'm mistaken Independence Day does support. The really odd part is that the Saturn version must have been complete by this time; GamePro's review of the Saturn version appeared under the same cover date as this article, and everywhere I've seen lists February 1997 as its North American release date. So if it wasn't going to have Netlink support, you'd think SSM would have known that by this time, and if it was going to have Netlink support, it must have been stripped out at the last minute. Anyone know anything more?

Hmm. Photobucket 3rd party hosting expiring within an hour of the upload is new. My current finances really can't justify me spending 100 bucks a year on a premium account, especially as Photobucket is already one of my least favorite sites due to the insanely cluttered layout and cumbersome navigation. Anyone know of a better way of posting screenshots?

I have been using vgy.me/ to host the image for my signature for free like photobucket used to allow. Maybe that would work. Once i see the screenshot I can give a reply about independence day haha.

Oh yeah, that looks much better.
Sorry barry; your post didn't show up in my browser until after I had uploaded the image to vgy.me. How would I upload an image to the forum?

I have used Photobucket for close to a decade for free, went away from the net 'for a bit', came back and all my sigs and avatars are now broken links. I'll have a look at the link you posted and 'migrate' there instead

Is photobucket a UK thing? Everyone I see usually uses imgur since it's so quick and easy to use.

There is an "add image to post" button when you reply, at least for me there is. This isn't available in mobile browser, you have to put it in Desktop site mode or use a PC.

My eyes must have glazed over that button a million times before. Thanks.

Martinii great to have you back! Its been a couple years it seems
Secondly this is a fascinating detail you found.
As a person who was a fan of all things Netlink, I had never heard or read about this possible detail, even in all the years on the Netlink forums.
I wonder if its possible to do more research on this.

Ok I just looked in the US manual and this is what it says. So its in fact Link Cable compatible! Even though its not Netlink, its still crazy I never knew about this. There are only a small handful of games that came out over here that even work with the 2 TV link cable (including the debug mode in Hexen). Still learn something new/random in 2018 about the Saturn At a basic level ID4 is neat that it has split screen deathmatch at all. You didn't see that much early on with Saturn or PS1.

Martinii great to have you back! Its been a couple years it seems Actually, it's only been a year and a half. I'd been meaning to drop on by to post the link to the Sword & Sorcery script, but kept neglecting to get around to it. Okay, I did have a feeling the "Network" option was in fact referring to the link cable and not NetLink. Still, good to know. Thanks, Derek. And yeah, link cables weren't well-supported on any platform, even the PlayStation. It wasn't a practical option for 95% of gamers; in addition to two controllers, you needed two consoles, two television sets, two copies of the game, and (of course) the link cable. Unless you happened to have a friend interested enough in the game to get it themselves, that was a lot of extra dough to shell out, to say nothing of the logistics of setting up two television sets in one room. Developers and publishers realized this, so you had the old peripheral catch-22 where developers wouldn't bother with link cable support because no one owned link cables, and gamers were even less likely to buy link cables because hardly any games used them.

I guess it depends on how you look at it. More games supported it than the average peripheral, but compared to the number of games that had split screen multiplayer it was pretty paltry.
