Hello all
Not posted here for a couple of years - life's been getting in the way just lately.
Anyway, I recently dug out my Saturn and started buying a few new (to me) games for it. I got X-Men vs Streetfighter and I can't get it to work, all I get when trying to load it is a screen of Japanese text - I know no Japanese at all but I think it might be telling me that a 4MB cart is required but not found(?) (I took a picture of said screen but I can't figure out how to post it here!)
I'm using a PAL model 1 Saturn with 50/60hz switch and Action Replay 4MB Plus, which (I thought) should be a suitable set-up for this game. I have Vampire Saviour which, I believe, also uses the 4MB expansion - this works perfectly. The Saturn itself and all my other games (PAL & JP) are also functioning absolutely fine.
Am I doing something wrong or have I bought a duff copy? (The disc looks like it's in perfect condition, no scratches or signs of rot at all) Or is there something wrong with my Action Replay? (Again, it seems to be functioning as it should)

Now I could be wrong. But X-Men vs Streetfighter might be one of the games that uses an exclusive RAM cart and actually doesn't work with the Action Replay. Again I might be wrong and someone who actually owns it would know, but I know they're are a few fighting games that won't work with the Action Replay.

You are wrong this time I'm afraid captainkael. X-Men vs SF works with an Action Replay. You can actually translate the JPN text yourself, if you have google translate on your phone just hover it over the JPN text and it will translate it to English for you.
Regarding the problem with it not playing X-Men vs SF, I used to get that problem occasionally on PAL Saturns which is one of the reasons I switched to a JPN console, I've never once had that problem since. I personally think from experience the PAL Saturn model 1 consoles are far less reliable than Model 2's for many reasons but however try taking the cart out and reinserting it. You shouldn't have to do that as it works for Vampire Savior but sometimes that is the solution. You may have a faulty action replay cart. If you decide to get another one look for the ones with the comms port ontop as they were better made.

Thanks for the replies. I tried google translate (great idea btw, I hadn't even considered that), and the message is telling me that the 4MB cartridge isn't inserted and to try re-inserting. I tried a bit of fiddling but it didn't help - in fact I think I nearly killed the AR, it went a bit weird for a couple of minutes just doing things by itself. It's back to normal now, but X-Men v SF still won't work. I've got another PAL Saturn, a model 2, which I'll try it out on when I have time, unfortunately that Saturn doesn't have a 50/60hz switch so it won't be full speed/full screen, but I'll be able to see if it loads up at least. Failing that, I guess I'll just have to get myself a Japanese Saturn - I've been toying with the idea anyway, perhaps this is enough of an excuse to justify it

just a heads up but is the AR actually being registered on the Saturn ? When you switch on the Saturn it should go straight into the AR boot screen options.
If it's not doing that then you have to switch of the saturn and re position the AR cart and switch back on and see if it boots up. The saturn cartridge port is extremely fiddly and sometimes you might have to tile the cartridge backwards, forwards, lift it a little etc then switch on the machine...

Yes, the AR is working as it should, takes over at boot time and gives you the menu. Like I said earlier, I can play Vampire Savior (the only other game I have that requires the 4MB) absolutely fine.
