My RPi 4 arrived today and while I wait for a couple more peripherals (USB Saturn pad, case and 2nd hand monitor), I hooked it up to the 37" TV in my games room. I downloaded Yabause and the Saturn region bios files from my go-to r0m site and powered the emulator up. So far, it runs smoothly and appears to be able to at least play the intro to Panzer Dragoon Zwei without stuttering and jerking like the Pi 3 did. It plays equally well in software or OpenGl video mode.
Hopefully, the USB Saturn pad will arrive tomorrow and I'll get to see what the score is gameplay-wise. There are tons more options to mess around with but it's looking promising so far.
Maybe the RPi4 will become a cracking little emulation machine for Saturn gaming. PS1 and all 8/16 bit stuff all emulates very well on the RPi3, so I'm expecting bigger and better from the new 4gb/1.5ghz, quadcore RPi4.

Nice.
Let me know how the emulation is for other consoles too. I know stuff like Playstation, PSP, and PC Engine are a little hit and miss with my 3, and then stuff like N64, GCN and Dreamcast is pretty much a no go.
Even though I only got my Pi a couple of months ago, I'd upgrade and use my old one for films and stuff if the 4 is a substantial improvement.

A quick update:
Though my time has been restricted, I've managed to get Daytona and Darius Gaiden running with Yabause. Daytona runs at 28-30 fps, but the sound is messed up. Darius runs at a constant 30fps and is completely playable. I haven't gotten Retroarch to install properly yet as it's not yet been implemented for the Pi4, but I have a week off next week, so I'll investigate further. I've just been experimenting with standalone emus. My biggest issue so far is trying to find a way to install Picodrive by itself.

I now have the multi-platform emulator, Mednafen, running beautifully with Megadrive and Snes games. It runs so much smoother from the command line than inside a desktop session. I'm still using Yabause for Saturn emulation for now. The Raspberry Pi 4 version of Retropie has not been released yet, but is allegedly coming soon. That'll be the end of messing about with standalone emus.

Mednafen was a bust. Retroarch, properly set-up is the way to go. I'm now running N64 and (mostly 2d) Saturn titles now quite well. 32X games such as VF,Doom and Virtua Racing are awesome. I still have to go through the list of available gfx drivers to get the best results.
I should say I'm still running Yabause and Retroarch from the Raspbian desktop, rather than a dedicated OS like Retropie, which is not available yet for Pi4.

How is N64 emulation on the Pi 4? Are most games running perfectly now? On mine, I think only a few are kinda playable. Having most/all working properly would be great!

The ones that play, do so fluidly and well. Mostly racers so far, such as F1, Monaco GP and V Rally 99. I'm using the Mupen 64 emu included as a Retroarch core. When a 64 rom doesn't want to run, it crashes Retroarch immediately so you know pretty quickly which ones work. Like I said, I still have to test the emus with the different gfx drivers to see which ones work best. The PSX emu core (PCXE) works best of all. I was playing Ridge Racer 4, G-Darius and Pandemonium full screen last night. As a bonus, my wired 360 controller was recognised instantly, including the analog sticks.

I'm up and running now.
PSX emulation via PCXE (RE-ARMED) is the business. It doesn't look as sharp as the Saturn emulator, but there's no sign of any slowdown in any of the 3D games I've tried. Ridge Racer 4 looks particularly good.
Saturn emulation via Yabause is slow on the 3D stuff and perfect on all the 2D stuff. Guardian Heroes and Panzer Zwei are amazing, Nights is a bit slow - 40fps - but all the 2D stuff like shooters and the like are fine. I was gutted that Sega Rally doesn't want to play. It's ony running at 16fps on my setup.
N64 is a bit hit-or-miss. Some play great (GT64), where some are not so hot (V-Rally). Wipeout64 and Waverace64 are brilliant, as is 1080 Snowboarding.
I use the standalone Yabause for Saturn and Retroarch for everything else. All other machines (8 & 16-bit) run flawlessly like on other computers.
I haven't tried DC or PS2 emulation on the Pi4 yet, but I'm going to soon.

Yabause is asking for the location of the rom for RAM or AR carts to enable games like KoF and Metal Slug, etc. Maybe I'm just not very good at googling, or too lazy, but I can't find the roms online at all. Yes, it's 2019 and I just asked for roms on a gaming forum, but please help an old guy out if you can

Have you tried emuparadise? I just had a quick look and found Metal Slug there. Presumably they have all the other Saturn stuff too.
You see with Emuparadise, they never actually removed the roms from the site. They only removed the access to them, meaning they still exist. If you google it, you should be able to find the browser script that allows you to download the games from there. I can't remember where I got mine from, but it was from a google search so shouldn't be too hard to find.

Actually, just found it. In Opera, I have Tampermonkey installed which runs scripts, and this will allow you to use EP like normal: // ==UserScript== // @name EmuParadise 1up // @icon I see what happened there. I have over 400 saturn roms on a dedicated ssd, it was the Action Replay cart rom or one of the 4meg ram cart roms I was looking for.
Sorry, bud.
