I want to get into games like X-Men vs Street Fighter, Vampire Savior and Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter .
This game make use of the Ram Cartridge. As far I have seen some games where even shipped with the Cartridge.
Now to my Maybe stupid Question.
Does this Cartridge is similar to the N64 Expansion pack? In the manner that is mandatory to run for some games, while other games do not need it necessarly but the Ram Expansion does improve the visuals?
Or is mandatory and the above mentioned games would no work with out the ram Expansion?

The overwhelming majority of games that make use of either RAM cart, including the ones you mention, require it and won't run without it. I can't think of any games that use the entire capacity of a 4MB cart but don't require it. A very small handful of games can use the 1MB cart (usually the 4MB cart will work as well) to display extra graphics but don't require it to run (Cotton 2 and Marvel Super Heroes are the only ones I can think of). EDIT: Cyberbots is another game with optional RAM cart use. EDIT 2: Here's an exhaustive list documenting all of the games that can or must use a RAM cart: www.satakore.com/cartridge.php

Are you going to play these on a PAL or US console?
If so, and are using an Action Replay 4-in-1 that will run the 4MB games for you.
However MSH v Streetfighter glitches at 50Hz. So watch out for that if you are playing on an unmodded PAL console.

Thanks for your input. I am going to use it on a japanese console.

That's OK. then. Most imports are OK at 50Hz - i played them that way for a few years - but some do glitch - MSH V SF being the main culprit. Those 3 games need the 4MB. The official cart isn't that expensive - it doesn't add a huge amount onto the cost - at least it didn't when I last checked. I'm on the lookout for a nice copy of Vampire Saviour myself. I have the boxed version of MSH v SF with the cartridge and jewel case version of Xmen v SF so the standard version of Vampire Saviour will be good enough for me. I'd like a nicer version of Xmen v SF though as it doesn't have the insert on the back of the case.

Also they are take up less space. I know what you mean. I think the copy I have was the boxed version instead of the disc only version - but because it was the first 4MB versus game maybe there isn't a "proper" disc only version of that game? Disc only Vampire Saviour will be enough for me, but I'd like it with the insert on the back of the case.

IIRC every game, that required a RAM cart, had two releases - one with the cart packed in and one without. Including 1mb games.
However if the cart was optional, then it usually did not get a pack-in release.

Sorry n00b Saturn owner (well it’s in the post) question in this old thread.... Could the msh v sf play if you had the disk and a 4 Meg cartridge from a different game , say xmen v sf? Or are the cartridges game specific? Do they hold data for that specific game? Thanks for helping an aged new user

RAM carts aren't game specific. There are a couple of games that use ROM carts which are game specific (King of Fighters '95 and Ultraman), but your 4MB cart will work with any game that needs a 4MB cart.
The 4MB cart will also generally work for games that need a 1MB RAM cart, but there are exceptions that result in corrupted graphics (Samurai Shodown 3, King of Fighters '96 and Real Bout Fatal Fury).

An AR cartridge will also act as a 4MB expansion for those Capcom games remember.
