The PAL release tends to be the best performing version on the system next to the NTSC and Japanese ports with marginally smoother frame rates. Has anyone ever tried playing a PAL copy of Doom and then messed with some of the advanced motion enhancement settings on their TVs to help with the motion lag?

how would adding more lag help with lag?
Just play a good port of Doom if you want to play Doom. Check out the Saturn port for historical curiosity then go play it on virtually any other console or PC.

I always had it in my mind that Saturn Doom is appalling and rarely went near it. When I dug it out last year, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was not nearly as bad as its rep would have you believe. Fair enough, the PSX version is worlds better but it's not as horrific as say the Amiga 1200 version (even with an 030 chip and extra ram). I havent played the pc original so I cant compare, but imo, it's not nearly as "unplayable" as the reviews suggest. I did hear however that the later levels slow down more than the early ones.

The unofficial Amiga port was pretty sweet as I remember, I played it on an 040 and it ran fairly decent. On an 060 it flies along at full screen.

Gloom was quite something with split screen multiplayer too, really needed an 030 or better to shine but still great.
