Agreed. This is kinda F'ed up.
My main question is, why didn't he get this manufactured in Asia? Considering he's from Australia and prices would have been lower. It seemed like a no brainer.

Screw this project. The guy successfully grifted
I wouldn't support this nonsense
He deserves all the backlash he's getting
I would love to see the comments section for this locked post on Patreon.

I'm looking forward to getting mine, price is disappointing but I've no idea how expensive it was for him to manufacture, I imagine it's a fair bit more complex than a regular ODE.
I can't imagine many folks taking this over the alternatives now though, given it's fairly easy to swap out your CD drive.
Still, very cool it finally came out.

I'd be hopeful that this is just the initial price for the very first run, which was unfortunately inflated due to COVID, and due to the numerous problems he had with prototyping, and that the later runs will become cheaper.
Even with the 6 years of research he put into it, this is an extremely high price, especially since there's competition now.

You don't have to buy the first batches if you have a problem with the price. More will be made where prices will subsequently drop.

Not to mention the whole R&D process was completely paid for by everyone else. Not sure that COVID is the reason for the current price, though. Seems like that might end up being a reason given, but it would just be taking his word for it at that point. It is what it is, I suppose, but I'm a bit more sceptical. You don't have to buy the first batches if you have a problem with the price. More will be made where prices will subsequently drop. I LOVE bold statements like this.

Maybe we could see the Satiator be licensed and have different ones on the market to compete in pricing. After I've given it some thought, I don't believe this is how Prof Abrasive intended to price the Satiator. With the USA being the worst affected in the world with Covid-19 plus the riots going on out there must have put strain in the manufacturing process. Also, this is the first of its kind ODE with nothing else like it on the market. Got to cut the guy some slack as he's basically done all R&D by himself (as far as I'm aware). Something to put into perspective is the complexity of this project. The community has known of this method of running games on saturn for 4 years since that video of Prof. Abrasive first showing off his research. In that time, no one else has come forward saying that they were also looking into developing a similar ODE that uses the MPEG card slot. This could be down to a few factors. Could be that research would be too time consuming or it would be to expensive to produce. Regardless, Prof Abrasive is still the only one developing this specific ODE which I think is fair to say, the one ODE most saturn owners were waiting out for. Although with that all said, I do feel that anyone who was a top tier patreon supporter does have a reason to be a little let down. Only $15 dollars off when they've already donated the whole cost of the product and then some must feel like a kick in the teeth.

They're on sale to the general public now. Still way too expensive for what it is. It would cost around the £220 mark if you wanted to import one of those things. www.satiator.net/Satiator_p_12.html

I'm happy with my Phoebe still though, converting to CCD format isn't the end of the world and I got to enjoy ODE before any other options were on market

I think a few will sell but if it shows itself to be worthwhile then a chinese clone will follow for a fraction of the price, as sure as night follows day. That's just reality and I'm sure while the research itself is cool, I'm sure he didn't get into low unit electronics manufacturing expecting to pay off his mortgage!

Nobody is going to clone it to sell a handful. I have really no idea how the big market is. It's probably got bigger due to lockdown but still hard to test.

No one would ever get into such stuff for the purposes of getting rich. It's done purely for the purposes of serving the enthusiasts in the community. I know the people who sell the NeoSD Pro have made losses. To me the big problem is that it's been manufactured in California. While such a place may have the biggest tech brains in the world. It's not exactly going to be reasonably priced as a result. I do think someone will obtain one and reverse engineer it and sell their own variant. For which Dr Abrasive isn't going to have the time and money to pursue legal action against. Especially if it's someone from China.

Does anyone know if you'd pay import taxes on it?

Did a bit more digging and it looks like you'd have to pay an additional £55 at post office to cover the import duties.
