What was it that made it a pain to install?

The need to remove all the screws and Metal plate on the Saturn mother board, when on the DC it was that much simpler. Not a fault of the MODE, just the Saturn's Mother board.
Great product mind and works like a charm. So much better for Dreamcast games.

Watched a video of the Saturn install. Seems you have to take a lot out of the case to remove binding posts that held the drive to make room for this. But it seems to work well enough.
Did you have to trim one of the new posts that holds it in place? In the video I saw it caused an issue with the cartridge slot.

seen some youtube vids of this and it looks pretty good though some have had install niggles. I'm not sure if I am going to get one yet though. I have a hdd in a PS2 but I find I prefer to use the discs instead. There is something about the physical ownership and handling that is lost for me. I play vinyl records too though, so it must be a personality trait (flaw?!). I guess when the cd-roms have had it then we'll have no choice, though I do wonder how good emulation will be by then? (given how good 8 and 16bit is now).

Didn't know there was an official x4 Memory card / VMU. It's the one irritating aspect of Dreamcast gaming. I have several including some official coloured ones - have a black, red, green and blue and a bunch of white. Have a GAME branded 3rd party one too. I use the colours to identify genres (e.g. red=vs fighting) saves some messing about swapping them back and forth wen trying to find the right VMU.

They should've released 2 different boards instead, one for Saturn, one for DC, that work on the native mounting points.

I think the thing has to be a certain size for all the interfaces it has. As you say - maybe 2 different devices would be better - but then that's two different manufacturing setups.
At the end of the day the installation is non destructive - it could all be undone. The Dreamcast install is a lot easier from what I hear.

Two different boards would be additional costs for manufacturing and R&D and for those that can't afford two units, you can use the same unit in either the DC or the Saturn. Yeah SEGA bought out a official 4 MB cart bit late in the day mind
