Bug Too also had a bunch of transparent effects, like the ghost on Weevil Dead. It used sprite-on-sprite transparency, which was rarely used on Saturn titles, plus VDP2 overlays for a global fog effect. The transparent VDP2 mist in Bug II is the best example of such an effect I saw on a 32Bit system. Loved the speech of when you got caught by that transparent ghost and it would shot out "Losser" also enjoyed the Monty Python/Manic Minner death sequence (the big foot). The game was so full of neat and clever little touches

I assume that's a joke. I can't really tell if you are being serious or not. Shinobi isn't that hard. Stage 4 gave me some grief because I didn't know how to get past some dude or other, but the game isn't so bad. It has some hard parts, sure, but I don't think it's any harder than most Shinobi games. Also Bug and Shinobi are very different games. I don't think comparing the difficulty is very fair. I'm very good in some games and terrible in others. Being good in one type of game doesn't automatically make you a god of all games. Shinobi X wasn't that hard. I had issues with the difficulty levels in Bug 1 and II and Three Dirty Dwarves and it a shame as I wanted to play and enjoy all the levels in those games, but they were just too hard. Same goes for Mr Bones but didn't like that game anyway

It's not a joke, I don't know a single person that has ever completed it. So congrats on that achievement. I'm just surprised as I remember your frustrations with Tomb Raider which I also share so the fact that you were able to withstand Shinobi X shows resilience. Of course they're completely different games but they both try ones patience. But certain games click with certain people as you pointed out, I often hear Enemy Zero, X-Men Cota, Athlete Kings, Radiant Silvergun and VF2 are too hard but to me they're a breeze. On the flipside of that Dark Savior scenario 5 I could never unlock no matter how hard I tried and Darius Gaiden I could never complete. So I get it. Well done.

Never played either Bug game but Shinobi is a bitch.I can get to the level with the mine carts(level 4 i think) but then the urge to throw my pad out the window becomes uncontrollable. I think that's either level 3 or 5. I wanna say 3. 4 is the one inside the ninja building and has those annoying sword guys. The mine cart thing is a little irritating. It's basically just memorisation, with failure for not knowing exactly where they are going to come. Most mine cart levels in games tend to be like that for some reason! I remember the one in Taz-Mania being equally as annoying!

I think the issue with Enemy Zero is 'getting' the combat system. I find that I have to revisit the training whenever I want to replay it just to get all the noises and timings down. Once you've got that down, it's not too bad. The game is definitely punishing though when you mess up. As for Tomb Raider, it wasn't that it was hard. More just frustrating design. I felt like the crappy controls resulted in failure more often than not, and when you have an instant death fall and a save point really far back, it feels more annoying. Especially since it was rarely your own fault. I also struggle with stuff like Darius Gaiden, but I suck at that kind of game anyway. Not played Silvergun but I also imagine it would cause me issues!

I get that all the levels are meant to be unique, but it fluctuates between levels that are straightforward to levels that are ridiculous tough. It's also compounded by having to enter the options menu and selecting the level manually every time you die. It's unnecessary and frustrating. Shame really since when that game is good, it's really good.

I admire its scope and quest for originality but it didn't work for me.

Just started trying Bug! since I got it like a month ago. Haven't seen the first boss yet and damn is the game difficult. I enjoy the charm and challenge of the game so I'll keep plugging away. Lot of memorization and the execution of certain sections can make ya wanna toss the controller!!

Bug! is the same kind of deliciously-frustrating game experience (for me) as playing Touring Car. I know it's not good for my sense of well-being, but I can't resist playing it once or twice every six months or so. It's a controller-buster, that's for sure. Pretty unfair in parts, but fun in equal amounts. BABYSEALS is a code to remember for when it gets too much. B, A, B, Y, South (down), East (left), A, L (shoulder button), South (down), keyed on the start screen gets you a level select and ABC together skips to the next stage. You're welcome

Thanks!
Is there a save feature? I thought I read that it saves after you finish the finale of each 3 scenes. Would it start you at the beginning of the next world you had gotten to if there is? (Haven't beaten the first boss yet)
I want to beat it without the code, but will ponder it if no save is possible.

No saves, not even a password. You have limited lives to beat in one sitting.
There is a level skip so I'd recommend using that as a makeshift password system. Skip to the world/level you got up to and continue from there. Beating it without a code is commendable, but screw it - this should have had a password save to begin with. It's not short/easy enough to warrant requiring one playthrough and they should have known that when they made it.

Yep, I'll be using the level skip. Definitely needed a better save feature, at least the codes exist.

Took a break from this for awhile, but finally finished Bug! over the last couple months. Had some pretty cool boss fights and plenty of frustrating deaths, still enjoyed the game though.
Tried starting a little of Bug Too! although I didn't like the presentation of it to be honest. Will probably play through it eventually but my first impressions weren't great.

I've been playing a lot of Bug! lately and it's so weird I never played it before. I love platformers. It has a lot of cute gimmicks, but it feels so cheap for some reason. Cheap in a loving way that's growing on me.
What was Spielberg doing at CES 1995?
I was just reading about the history of Bug! on wikipedia. It's interesting to think this is one of the first 3d platformers ever made. I keep thinking to myself, 'This is what Saturn Sonic would be like, but faster... kinda glad that didn't happen.' Apparently there were different characters trying to become the next Sega mascot. So weird to think about that. Sega actually keeping in mind they need a mascot for the new console and trying to find a mascot that -wasn't- Sonic.
