I used to really like platformers but I got fed up with them after the 16bit gen. I enjoyed Mario 64 but after that I was done with the genre. Didn't play one for many years. So wouldn't have gone near the likes of Bug or Clockwork Knight back then.
Every so often though I take a look at them again and it looks like I might enjoy it. I actually like the fact that it's 3D but kind of plays 2D. I don't have much tolerance for that era of 3D graphics though - just looks a bit too rough for me - but those old graphics do have a certain charm. There's a game called Whizz that has a similar style of gameplay.
I think I'd enjoy Clockwork Knight for the same reasons too.

Yeah, I'm somewhat surprised by how much I'm enjoying Bug! It has a lot of charm. Now, I know early consoles had clipping/collision issues and the polygon budget was really low. But come on. Look at Bug's right hand. They couldn't give him fingers in the prerendered title screen? They gave him 2 fingers and some bumps. They couldn't be bothered to 3d render some bent fingers. That makes it worse is that he's supposed to have 4 fingers to begin with.

That's what kept me going thru it, the charm. I was always looking forward to what weird enemies, levels, bosses would be next. Once you get into it, hard to put down. davyk Haven't played any of the Clockwork games either, but will eventually.

I was wondering why I had to sit through it every time. That intro cut scene looks so awful by today's standards. It looks like someone's first attempt at using cgi. The legs don't even move, the feet just shuffle around. Mario Galaxy basically just copied Bug! whole sale . I still have, like 5 more levels to explore and an entirely second game! I fucking love this game. What a hidden gem. I can't believe I never played this before.

Bug is a great game, the sequel is even better and looks and sounds amazing. Like with so many SEGA America games they simply make it too hard for its own good and really the game should be have been able to save at each check point

I just picked up Bug! again this week and god it is -so- hard. I'll get to Splot level 1 with all my lives and continues and it's just one impossible thing after another. But it's rewarding and exciting, you know, beating a certain area that took you so long to overcome.
I have to say, this game is way harder than Contra or Ninja Gaiden. I'm on stage 3 level 1 out of 6 stages with 3 levels a piece and I'm close to being stumped. I just hope the next few levels go easy on me.

I've been playing the sequel and while I didn't like it at first I'm really enjoying it now. It is very difficult as well, so much trial and error. I like the colors, level design improvements, and the music is solid. I'm on the 3rd stage of that(Antennae Day). Great games once you dive into them!

Oh my god, I'm the biggest fucking moron ever. I finally got to the Burrbs, second to last level. And I just realized, on the home screen, you can start at any level with the same number of continues you had when you first got there... I'd been going back to the beginning of the entire game when I ran out of continues... I was thinking to myself, "Gee this game is way too long. Going back to the beginning is just too punishing wgen it takes several hours to get back to the point you died at."
So, basically, I've perfectes the first 5 levela and can get through them without dropping a continue. Lol. I take it back. This game isn't harder than contra or ninja gaiden. I'm just a moron.

I just turned the volume on for the first time. Wow. Did they pay the sound effect guy in mouse pads? The sound is painfully bad.

Don't mind me, just another dear diary about Bug! God, I love this game. There are -a lot- of Sonic parallels.
First you have the bonus stages throughout the game. The locations you enter the bonus stage also act as recall markers when you die.
You also have mushrooms that you jump off of.
When an object jumps you into the air Bug does a spin jump just like sonic.
You also have the anthropomorphic animals.
Lastly, there are several instances where Bug has to jump on enemies in a sequence to act as a bridge to pass a chasm. I don't remember this in previous Sonic games, but I sure remember it in sonic games made in the future, namely with the homing dash.
Anyway, just few cool observations. I took a break for a bit and I'm finally on the last level so you won't see my bumping the thread soon enough... I almost want to wait on Bug 2. Once I beat that one the saga is over...

Sonnington Those are some keen observations! I wanted to wait on the sequel as well since I didn't like the first level of Bug Too when I tried it immediately. Read nothing but great things about the second one, so I dove in again a month or two after finishing the first. I've been trucking along with Bug Too whilst doing the Community Playthrough, loving this game but it is getting tough. Antennae Day's(World 3) Scene 1 was a pain enough but I could not get past Scene 4. The lightning bug jumping sequence I had to have tried 50 times with the main character before I finally had the idea to try the others. Finally got through it, now gotta do it again and master the end of Scene 5 to get to World 4.

And, man, I'm done with these mechanics for a while. I've played some Bug Too back in December. I got through the first 3 levels and it really is a different feeling game. Bug is more about the maze and timing puzzles. Bug Too is more about discovering secrets. At least, from what I've played it is. I can't believe these games arent more highly rated. Definitely some of the best I've played in the 32 bit era.
