Are these desperately in need of re-capping?
model 1 more than 2, or all the same?
Does how hard the system has been used affect the re-capping life span or just raw age alone of the hardware?
Just curious and beginning to wonder about these things
'retro' wise, I have a DC VA1/Saturn model 2/N64/ and recently acquired a SCPH-5501 PS1 (that I'm planning to get an Xstation ODE installed for it )
But my DC has gdemu clone+DCHDMI, Saturn Phoebe ODE, N64 Everdrive64, and yeah..

I am no expert but I have read enough of zyrobs posts to know that they should be recapped. If I recall correctly he always mentions that the caps are intended for a 20 year lifespan so we are well over. All that being said, I have not recapped mine, but I also bought it refurbished so maybe it was done. That was over 10 years ago so I have no idea haha.

Most are fine, if you are having an issue, take it apart and check them. All the ones I have there is no leaks or other issues. But if you are worried about them, console5 has the sets available.

The problem isn't leaking caps. As far as I know, Saturns are not prone to leaking caps - over all the years I have yet to see a single unit with leaking caps. Electrolytic capacitors have a finite lifespan. Basically they have a paper layer inside that is soaked up with electrolyte, and this dries up over the years. At the operating temperature of the average videogame console, depending on the type of cap, they'd last 20-30 years or so. It depends on the rating of the cap and the temperature (higher temps - faster drying), and generally how often it was used (the caps dry faster when not in use). When an electrolytic cap is beyond it's rated lifespan, it will not have the same electronic characteristics anymore. It will have a lower capacitance, higher impedance, worse leakage current, etc. Basically, Electrolytic caps perform worse at older age, which can lead to instability in an electronic system. This isn't Saturn specific either, it can affect all old electronics to some degree. If you have a Saturn that is unstable but starts working right after it has "warmed up", ie. it stops crashing once it has been running for a while - that's a sign of the caps being dry and needing replacement.

I want my Phoebe ODE model 2 Saturn to last 'forever' (asterisk) so getting mine professionally re-capped and adding laser bear AC jack
