Just hooked up a brand new retrobits controller and it feels so good. So responsive. It makes me wonder if my 3d controller is just old or it was built that way. I know I once killed a ps2 controllers x button, but besides that, I can't remember any other time I've thought the buttons on a controller were significantly mushier or less responsive than another.

The controllers use rubber membranes and those will eventually wear out.

i prefer the slightly worn-in feel of my original japanese pads to retrobit ones. And the matt texture of the dpad. Still good the retrobit ones though , I'm sure they'll bed in nicely and I could probably swap the d-pad if needed.
I'm hoarding dualshock 2's! Lots of them are worn now and fixing can be a pain as there was 3 different membranes. IME saturn pads seem to age better.

Interesting. Is there any way to buy replacement membranes for the 3d controller?

Ebay has replacement controller membranes (search for sega Saturn parts, or sega Saturn rubber pads), but they are all made in china so your mileage may vary.
