Still waiting on those new crystals, I bought ones for both proper 50 and 60Hz output (17.7344MHz and 14.318MHz respectively) hopefully they'll arrive tomorrow but given the experiences griffin has shared I'm not too confident at this point.
The X1 and X2 component footprints on the board are electrically the same as far as the board is concerned, so if you ever need to perform a replacement getting one in either form factor will work.

I found this on my VA9 and it was much easier to find the X1 form factor for the pal crystal frequency. I bought 300 so if anyone needs any in the UK let me know and I'd be more than happy to share, as I don't think I'll ever need that many.

If you can send to mainland Europe, I'll take a dozen.

That shouldn't be a problem, they are the surface mount form factor but the legs can be bent straight to fit perfectly. If you want them I would be more than happy to send them to you.

Er, what do you mean by that? Surface mount crystals don't have any legs whatsoever. Can you give a part number, or a product link to wherever you bought it from?

Of course, I have taken some pictures to show you the actual crystal, you can see the crystal as it comes and after I bend the legs down. photos.app.goo.gl/MxoHxWycaPT9MJvRAThe listing on ebay is titled x300 pcs **NEW** ACT HC49US-SMX 17.734MHz, Crystal Oscillator, Smd So the part number is ACT HC49US-SMX. I'd be happy to send if you needed any and we're happy with needing to bend the legs.

Yup, as I expected. Swapping the crystal did nothing. I still have my cap set on the way from LCSC but at this point I'm not even sure that'll make a difference.

If you can confirm that the pins fit through the hole properly once bent, then I'll take a dozen.

Hi Zyrobs, yea sorry should have been more specific. Yea it's the crystal I used on the one in currently trying to fix, plays games not issue with that crystal, and fits perfectly once the legs are bent down. Drop me a message with your postal details and I'll get them sent out to you next week.
Speaking of the one I am trying to get working, it's pretty much exactly the same as last night. It is a bit temperamental trying to boot from the system menu, and for the first few tries going into the game from power on it tends to crash, but it does get into the game and all plays fine. I even got it to boot first time after leaving it off for an hour, after only about 5 minutes of play testing, but then trying to boot from the menu straight after failed. The PLL chip I put on might be not good (it was from a junked motherboard of unknown background, and my taking it swapping it could well have borked it too) but I will try adding some caps to the power rails to see if I can help with stability any. I'll keep you posted.

Replaced every single capacitor on the board, only to find it won't boot (not even the power LED comes on). When it rains it pours lol. Guess I'll have to look out for a new board at this point.

I have found getting hold of boards on their own is quite challenging, easier to just buy another faulty system. If you have the time and inclination then troubleshooting the new fault will be a really good learning experience. But if you don't fancy it and want to let the system go I'd be happy to take it off your hands and try to cover the cost of getting another broken system. Certainly don't want to see all your hard work end up in the bin.

Yeah, there used to be a seller who sold scrap boards, but he stopped selling them, which sucks, I have several empty shells but lack working motherboards.

After reflowing a few of the capacitors solder joints, I was able to get the mainboard to boot once again. However the issue of video fluctuations and freezing when trying to read a disc still persists. I think there's a bigger underlying issue here that I probably can't fix.

The last time I had this issue I did a recap AND I replaced the EMI filters on the a/v port, and the fluctuations gradually disappeared after a few hours of playing. Maybe it's the EMI filters that need replacing? I've been meaning to test this for a while, but I don't have the time nowadays, plus all the "problematic" consoles I have will stop crashing after testing for an hour.
It's really extremely strange.
