Hi,
I bought a used PAL version of VF2, the disc is almost mint but when I play it I notice when I get as far as Lion's stage, there's no music. I can hear the laser on my Saturn trying to read the disc but nothing happens, although I can still play the game and as soon I beat him in the 2nd round it plays the "game over" song you hear whenever you win or have to continue, and all the rest of the music plays for the rest of the game. If I go into the options and switch the sound track to arranged then Lion's arranged theme plays, but I hate the arranged soundtrack compared to the original.
I didn't have another Saturn to try the disc on so I loaded up SSF on my PC and played it straight from the disc and sure enough, the same thing happens. Gave the disc a rub down with an anti static cloth, same thing, ripped the disc to PC without any error's and loaded in an emulator, same thing again when running the ISO. Ive read that there was 2 different PAL versions of the game, V2.0 on a grey disc (the one I have) and 2.1 on a blue disc that fixed some bugs, was this one of the bugs that got fixed in 2.1 ?.
Thanks in advance.

Check satakore.com for revisions of Saturn games. link to PAL VF2 in satakore.comI thought that PAL VF2 was the "best" version with respect to bug fixes etc. but I could be wrong.

Thanks. Doesn't mention anything about that specific issue being the reason they released the 2.1 (Blue) version. I was wondering if it was some kind of recall but cant find any mention of it online, it might just be a badly pressed CD from the factory.

I suspect it's a just a dud disc. Thankfully that game is dirt cheap to pick up.

The unit just can't read the audio track. My oldest copy of Baku Baku used to be like that, one of the music tracks simply did not play right or at all. CD Audio is very prone to damage, because it's meant to have interpolation in the decoding, so a few bad bits will still play right - but this just meant that the whole thing has extremely minimal digital error correction, so audio tracks either play or don't.
Maybe it would be a good idea to adjust the optical pickup, it could help. There should be youtube guides for the process, you need a multimeter and maybe a soldering iron to add an extra wire, because the test pin is on the bottom of the drive and you need to read it while the drive is running, hence the wire to extend it.

Dunno if it’s worth the effort, especially as the rest of my games run fine. Might download the PAL version 2.1 and burn it for comparison.

Damn right. If it's one game leave well alone!

May as well try burning the 2.0 version to see if it's the game causing the issue, or just a dodgy disc.
Note that a PC will always read the disc better, so it may show no faults there but the Saturn still won't be able to play the music.

The issue with the disc revision was to do with a bug with the music on Lion's Stage, this may well be the bug you are talking about. There isn't much about it on the net. From memory I think it was it didn't play on certain models of Saturn. The 1.001 revision (Blue disc) fixes this issue. Could also have been a bad PAL master disc like Skeleton Warriors.
