I was reminded of this by a post over at Sega-16, that that the Model 1 Saturn manual lists a Hard Disk Drive in the list of upcoming peripherals.
Now I've heard several reliable sources indicate that this was, as twith the floppy drive, a way to backup save games and download content from the internet, but does anyone have any more info on this?
I would love to know how far development got, and wether it interfaced through the cartridge port or the communication connector...

I believe it was never released. Though I'm sure a proto exists out there somewhere.

I've certainly seen something like this at a show in the past, and I'm sure somewhere published images of an official drive prototype, may have been Assembler actually...

Any news on any mods, that hook up a hard drive to the Saturn? Would be cool to just dump my games all on a hard drive, to avoid disc scratches, or having to change disks, plus of course the benefits of saving games. Although am already using the Datalink USB for the latter function.

No, although this is technically quite possible someone would need to sit and write the software to enable access to the hard disk.
