I'm a huge racer fan, but I have to admit the only racers I have for JAP Saturn are ones that were released in PAL land anyway!
So can anyone recommend some good JAP only racers for the Saturn?

Well Gale Racer which I just reviewed is good, if you want something a little more realistic I can highly recommend Touge King: The Spirits. Daytona CE is also worth getting as is F1 Live Information, whilst both of those are simply alternate versions of PAL games they are significantly different.

I have that and personally I think the handling and collision detection are simply abysmal. It doesn't look too bad and the audio is OK but I can't bring myself to play it for more than the hour I gave it when I first bought it.
Is there a secret to getting it to control better?

it depends on which type of racing games you like. ala Daytona (arcade) ? ala Sega Rally (realistic sim) ? ala wipeout ? ...
Both Touge king the siprits are goods in their types of game, same as Choro Q Park and Vatlva. You can also go for Gale Racer, Power Drift, Initial D and Syutokou Battle '97. Check also Tactics Formula if you like Racing simulation (more simulation than racing but it has some interests in its special genre).

I had Zero4 Champ Doozy-J Type-R, but being a man of such little patience, I didn't even get to the racing. There's so many pages of text and still anime images and Jap stuff that I didn't bother with it. I thinkthe racing takes second place to the teenage rpg elements.

No-one's mentioned the frankly apalling GT-24. Ok-ish visuals, but dreadful handling make this another to avoid.

It's really funny you asked that today, Mick!!! I was about to open a new thread almost with the same name on it, yesterday!!! I was playing Destruction Derby (which I found really entertaining... I only knew the second and the ' Raw' one on PSX) Street Racer and Cyber Speedway... 3 games I've bought early this week... Cyber Speedway and Street Racer were such disasters that I sat and stared at my feet (like Mc Clane in Die Hard) wandering what racing games to put aside with Sega Rally, Daytona, NFS, Destruction derby and Hi-Octane on my shelves. And I wanted to ask everyone on the forum... I looked on internet, youtube and on Satakore's website... It seemed to me that Wangan Dead Heat and Touge the King Spirits were great. I've just bought them on eBay for nothing. I'll tell you when I will receive them It seemed too that Zero-4 was unplayable for non-japanese players. The other ones looked awful, but, again, I didn't played them Choro Q Park, Vatlva and Syutokou Battle '97 intrigue me 'though

It's funny how opinions differ on the Cyber Speedway Vs Hi Octane debate.
Personally, I think Hi Octane is awful and Cyber Speedway is eminently more playable and better looking by far. The draw distance in Hi Octane is dreadful (much like Magic Carpet by the same developer). CS is no match for the great Wipeout, but is leagues ahead of HO IMO!

You'll notice, if you read my post again, that I'm talking about opinions. Some people like HO above CS, some prefer the opposite! The best thing to do would be bin the pair of them and put Wipeout 2097 in your machine!!

Yep I was sure of that!
But I can't find a decent copy of Wipeout... I've played it on the PSx (when I was young) and found it great... 'Played it for hours back then!!

Vatlva, Power Drift, Togue: King The Spirits 2 and Initial D are my choices for the best Japanese exclusive racers on Saturn. Gran Chaser, Hang On GP '95, Daytona USA Circuit Edition and F-1 Live Information were all released overseas with slight differences, so do these really count? As for GT-24, I've seen this one compared to Sega Touring Car on many separate occasions, which suggests the two may be quite similar (though I can't be sure as this game is one I'm still waiting to play - for better or worse)! Finally, it's probably best you don't get me started on WipEout 2097 as this just happens to be a personal all-time favourite...

Yeah I've never managed to get anywhere in that either but I've managed to get a race in and to be honest it's not that good anyway. One to avoid IMO.
