Well I just tried it out and tbh I REALLY don't see what the hype about it is...
I mean people pay stupid amounts of money for the game and it's not even that great. I'm sure there are HUGE shooter fans that will appreciate it far more than I do but tbh I just think it's over hyped. I'm sure there are far more better shooters which are fun out there.
Just my 2 cents although I'm probably gonna have death threats emailed to me after saying such a blasphemous thing hahahaha ;D

I always preferred Layer Section tbh, glad my copy of RS was cheap!

I've had the game since it was released, and never got into it. I own well over 200 shooters now, and this game still just offers nothing besides the graphics. I'd say the game is a lot like Final Fantasy VII really. Treasure is to action games as Squaresoft is to RPGs. Both have fanboys, anti-fanboys, and people like me who just don't give a shit.

I hope you're not insinuating that everyone who likes Radiant Silvergun is a Treasure fanboy, although. I'd say both Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun don't just offer "graphics" they offer a sense of ambiance that is really offered by few other games in the genre. People who appreciate artistry, should be able to appreciate this, at least.
Although I will agree that the gameplay is not terribly different from other shooters (and let's face it, how can it be? It's a shooter...)

No, just comparing the two companies. Both have large groups of fan-boys that will defend everything they make regardless of the quality. Both companies do have some solid games out there, but I dare say these two companies are the worst when it comes to the amount of rabid fanboys existing (only looking at software devs here). I like some games from both companies, but I don't like everything they make either. There is nothing wrong with enjoying RSG, but I personally do not see the appeal. My typical stance is just "it's not for me." But this still often leads to being attacked by the Treasure fans. It's always, "YOU DON'T LIKE SHOOTERS, IT'S TOO EXPENSIVE FOR YOU, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND IT." None of these statements are true, I simply don't enjoy playing it, it's not fun. Games should be fun.
Back when these forumns first opened, our old Mod opened up a webpage devoted to Saturn Shooters. His first review was Soukygurrentai, he was then email spammed with hate mail for not reviewing RSG first....

One thing that bugs me about Radiant Silvergun is the fact that although the core gameplay is extremely difficult, the levelling system, which affects both your firepower and the amount of continue credits you can use makes it a cakewalk if you attempt the game enough times.
I still like the game though and I wish more 2D shooters would dispense with power-ups the way RS and Ikaruga did.

Surely, you won't get any threat mails. I think that whenever someone has a negative opinion about this game (which is fine by me, I don't care, really!!) it's of the sort "I just don't like it". I don't like playing Super Mario 64, but I can agree that it's a well made game. I think this thread lacks any real discussion about the shortcomings and qualities of the game, and that would be more interesting to read than a poll of who likes it and who doesn't. That's the reason we had a Best/Worst Saturn Game thread. I will make my own summary of the game to hopefully get some opinions of substance: - The graphics ARE awesome, yet suffers from slowdown. Why didn't it support 1/4MB Ram cartridges? - The sound effects are very powerful. The music is very well orchestrated, although the tunes can get repetative. - The controls are very precise and innovative, maybe a bit slow for some. - It has a great story, very much in the spirit of 2001: A Space Odyssey. - There's an overall quality feel of the game that only Neo Geo games can match. - The high price is irrelevant to the judgement of the game.
Superdeadite: I know and respect your opinion by now, you shouldn't have to defend yourself anymore...

itrdavid: I'm not talking about you, dude. I repect your opinon, and your arguements are logical. Anyway my biggest problem with the game is that its extremely unbalenced. You have to chain (memorize) the entire game, or your weapons will be very weak, which makes the later boss fights take forever and it just gets boring. In order to chain properly you have to actually let tons of enemies fly off the screen. I have no problem with such a system if it was only for score, but chaining is essential just to actually finish the game itself. Or you can play Saturn mode, in which case the game becomes a total joke after a few game overs... The boss fights are cool, but there are way to many of them, also the actual stages, get shorter and shorter. There are times where you fight a boss, then 1 wave of enemies, followed by another boss. This is just lazy design. Those are my main gripes with the game. They just sucked all the fun out of it...

I can agree on that complaint, Superdeadite. The game picks up difficulty quicker than you can upgrade your weapons. The only way to compensate is to have a save file with the weapons at an appropriate level, but you will breeze through the first third of the game as a result. You can't do it in Arcade Mode though, fortunately it's a lot shorter.

Radiant Silvergun is a good game, but yes I do agree, it is boring.
Though I believe the soundtrack may have something to do with that. How would you guys view RSG if it had something along the lines of a metal soundtrack, or something along the lines of the Thunder Force games? Just try to picture that.
In a game, I find the soundtrack plays a major role in setting the mood. An action game like RSG needs something a little more upbeat in my opinion.

I guess I can only speak as somebody who isn't great at shooting games. I didn't find chaining to be essential to finishing the game. The levelling system makes te game easy after several attempts. On the other hand, that also seems to detract from the game. What is the point in going through so much repetition only to find that you haven't really gotten better at the game. It's just that your weapons are more powerful and your have more continue credits.
I would imagine it worked better as an arcade game.

They add the continuous leveling to 'help' you beat the game. It goes without saying but the game is quite difficult and it isn't required that you use the save feature.

I wouldn't say it needs something more "up-beat" I would say it needs something that matches the action more obviously, if you look at Ikaruga - the cues are very obviously arranged so that they match the enemy patterns and you can indeed use the music to help you improve timings. Thunderforce music would sound totally out of place if placed beside Radiant Silvergun's visuals, just try doing it in any video editing program to see what I mean. It's like trying to play OutRun 2 SP with Goo Goo Dolls as the Custom BGM... while both are good on their own, together they are just wrong.
