There are no buttons assigned to a specific pixie. You have your pixies displayed in the bottom right hand corner, you have to move the cursor along by pressing x or z (I think) and then pick which one you want by pressing A or C. You have to be quick and pay attention to how your enemy arrives before the battle begins. Its not as hard as it sounds. You'll notice with certain levels the majority of enemies will arrive in the same fashion and all you need to do is favour the pixies you think will be of the most use by hi-lighting them beforehand or memorising (by how many presses) where they are in the group.

You use the shoulder buttons to select the pixy, and A or C to activate them. You can change pixies when monsters first appear, but it's best to try to anticipate where monsters will come from and select the right pixies before you hit an encounter. For instance, if you're coming up on a right turn, it's a good idea to switch to the pixies which attack to the right (incubi, I think?).
EDIT: Missed Sych's post because I failed to realize we'd gone to page 2. Hence why my post repeats his to some extent.

OK, now i get it, many thanks. I've made it through Enrich Dungeon! Now i am on the way to the Aborigine Mansion. The game becomes more and more interesting and addictive. What makes it fabulous, is especially this music...

my disc rotted away several years ago and it has always been a thorn in my eye since I loved this game so much. recently bought a disc+manual only copy and have invested 8 hours into it already (hadn't plated it in more than 10 years). my god has this game aged well! the graphics as well. also I can't stand most turn based battle anymore but this game is so much quicker and pixie system is tremendous and I can never get over the dungeon design. this game has the best level/dungeon design out of any rpg ever made.
it's not just one of saturns best rpg's ever made it's one of the best rpg's ever made period and is still tremendous to play today.
also I love how it connects to the shining force 3 games in storyline as well as graphics and interface.

How is this game for someone that normally doesn't care for RPGs?
In terms of RPGs I like, I like Dark Savior (not really an RPG), proper Zelda titles (not really an RPG), Pokemon (accessible RPG with a paper-scissors-rock battle system, which is what makes me like it), and PDS (of course).
Other than that, I typically dislike the gameplay in JRPGs due to it being obtuse, grindy, or just slow. The games are also really long with contrived stories that are usually dull and generic.
I despise the final fantasy games, and don't care for the other JRPGs I've tried (although the combat in the Shining demo for the Switch was alright), and I'm debating if this will be my cup of tea or not.

the game has a ton of dungeons you might like. perhaps I would sooner try dragon force or shining force 3 if I were you.

I didn't enjoy it all that much. Constant encounters; aimlessly wandering around, and having to endlessly refer to the map screen. There's a dungeon early on that doesn't allow to warp outs, which was frustrating as I kept running out of magic thus needing to heal, but would often die to encounters when trying to escape. At the end even when I was well levelled up the final boss was as hard as hell.
There is a puzzle which involves trying to solve a simultaneous equation, which I enjoyed trying to figure out on paper during my bed time. On the other hand there is a golden temple which involves solving a riddle by moving in a specific way in order to gain entry. I got stuck on it for many hours and eventually solved by what seemed like a brute force approach.

Thanks for the response. I think this game probably won't be for me.
As for Shining Force 3 and Dragon Force, I'm pretty sure I won't like those. The gameplay looks like exactly the kind of gameplay I dislike in a JRPG. Ah well.

First title in the series was released on the Mega Drive. It's just like Zelda with little in the way of grinding.

Thanks for the response. I think this game probably won't be for me. As for Shining Force 3 and Dragon Force, I'm pretty sure I won't like those. The gameplay looks like exactly the kind of gameplay I dislike in a JRPG. Ah well. Yeah, Shining the Holy Ark is an old school, hardcore RPG. Which is one of the reasons why I love it so much, but obviously it's not the sort of game for someone who doesn't usually like RPGs. And yep, Shining Force III is definitely not for those who dislike RPGs either. Dragon Force is a combination of RPG and war simulation, so if you enjoy war sims you should like it in spite of its heavy RPG elements, but otherwise...
