Hmmmmm.....still hasn't responded to my question though. Will look elsewhere. Been dealing with him since 2003 half my collection was sourced through him. very reasonable at the time, ludicrously cheap by today's standards.

Hi! I realise this is an old thread but I have been doing a bit of research into this issue and wanted to add my findings to maybe help others looking into getting this version of the game or the early Sega Ages Space Harrier with the same issue for that matter. I own a PAL Sega Saturn Model 2 unit and both these early revisions work just fine on my system. However wherever you look for this information it always states it does not work on a Model 2! So what gives? The main thing that effects weather or not your system will run into this bug is down to the revision of motherboard you may find in your Model 2, I appear to have an early Model 2 which is using a similar board to the Model 1 hardware which is why my unit is not effected. I have also modded my system to play games from all regions at 50/60hz as well as having an action replay cart, whether your console is modded or not will have no impact on this though but in researching how to do my mod I had to work out what revision board my system had. I found this guide very helpful segaretro.org/Sega_Saturn/Hardware_revisions and was able to determine that my unit was a VA5 PAL which you will note says "same as VA3 PAL". We can also see at the top of the article that Model 1 hardware used boards VA0 - 3 so essentially indicating this is an early board in the Model 2 very similar to that used in the Model 1 hardware. Also this page gives some great info about the bug itself... "Note: the integrated sound block has a bug in certain 68000 commands, this might be the same bug as the Genesis 3 suffers from as that one also has an integrated 68000 made by Yamaha. The result is that certain games are incompatible with these boards. The Japanese only releases of Space Harrier and Outrun are the only two that come to mind, and both have received second pressings that eliminate this bug and work in all machines equally. Metal Slug is rumored to be incompatible, but this appears to be false."So armed with that info we can also see that boards VA10 to 15 have the following change " Sound block is now integrated to a single IC instead of two."So long story short if you have a Model 2 with a motherboard revision VA10 and above you are going to run into this issue. Hopefully armed with this info it might help people wanting to purchase an early revision of this game but have Model 2 hardware as you can open your system and have a peak at the motherboard and see if it is compatible or not. Obviously opening a system isn't for everyone but figured I would put this information out there for the community and anyone trying to google it like me I can clearly only vouch personally for the VA5 PAL Model 2 working with these games but it seems fairly clear from the information on Sega Retro what should / shouldn't work hopefully but mileage may vary. It would be interesting to get other peoples experiences with this and their Model 2's and what revision motherboard they have.

Affected Space Harrier too eh?
I ended up picking up a grey mk1 cheap - console only - no cables etc. My copy of JP Outrun runs on the grey but not the mk2 white.
Means I can use one with an AR semi-perma docked to play my US and unoptimised PAL games without swapping carts around too much.

Do you guys would consider the Saturn Version of Outrun worth checking out? I am interested in purchasing one, but the game is not cheap at the Moment. How close is the Saturn Version to the orginal Arcarde Version?
If it is rather close I am gothing to check the game out onece in the while and if they are is a cheap offer I am going to take it.
Could take some time until I am lucky.

With a lot of ports the phrase "arcade perfect" is thrown around a lot. Quite often that isn't quite true.
However in this case I believe it is correct.
I do not have extensive experience of the arcade game but I have played it and this feels pretty much spot on. The Japanese version is expensive. However if you can play US imports it might be worth getting that version of Sega Ages Vol.1 which you probably already know has Outrun, Space Harrier and Afterburner 2 on one disc.
I am led to believe (has been stated on sega-16 forums for example) that these 3 games have been recreated perfectly on the Saturn. My guess is the US version is a straight port of the JP single disc versions but if just wanting to play those games that would be your best bet. However that is a guess - I have no experience of the US version.
We got this in the PAL region too but the games were hacked and even when played at 60Hz there are issues with the game timer etc. There is also a reported bug in the PAL version with how the scrolling glitches occasionally which reduces its accuracy.
The JPN version is expensive but it does have some exclusive features. It has an optional remixed soundtrack which is brilliant - really updates it while retaining the Outlook feel. There is also a smooth mode that plays the game at 60FPS. I'm not sure I actually like this mode as much as I though I would as smoothness takes away a bit of the impression of speed - but maybe that's just me. It's still a great feature to have.
I would avoid the PAL version and try and get the US version if you can. If for collecting/playing then the JP version is worth it. However watch out for the mk2 console compatibility issue I mention in this thread.
I can try and capture some footage off my screen with the remixed soundtrack playing - though it can probably be already sampled on youtube.

Thanks a lot for the inf davyk. I am using a Japanese Saturn, but with the Action Replay 4mplus I own it should be possible to play imports if I am not mistaking?
In that case the Sega Ages 1 Volume 1 would be worth purchasing. Outrun and Space Harrier are title worth owning in physical form. I have played these games before but only in the Arcade in Shenmue 1. Not familar with After Burner 2 yet but it looks like a cool fighting plane game worth owning as well.

The Japanese Saturn verison is stunning and also plays like a dream with the Arcade Racer or 3D pad . I don't like the 60FPS mode or the new music tracks, but it's nice to have them all the same . Even now, not many racers top this game

I didn't like the remixed music in either OutRun or Power Drift on the Saturn, but it's still a nice option to have. I couldn't get on with the 60 FPS mode , it made the game seem slower LOL

Just ordered JP version of Space Harrier !!!!!!!
Not really interested in Afterburner 2 - I have never got on with that game.
Was a BiN for £30 so went for it. I always liked a bit of Space Harrier from time to time though Outrun has always been my favourite of that era.

Ok thanks fo the advice. I will keep my eyes open for the US Version and avoid the Pal Version. Not a big fan of Pal versions in that era anyway. my whole Saturn Collection so far consists of Japan Software only.

So long story short if you have a Model 2 with a motherboard revision VA10 and above you are going to run into this issue. Correct, and this is the bottom line. VA10 and later units will bug out in the first prints of Outrun and Space Harrier. As for PAL machines, there was a small batch of VA13 units made in 1997, but every other PAL console is at most VA9. So you have to be a bit unlucky to end up with a unit that can't run these games. If your PAL console has a serial starting with 17D, then it is a 1997 VA13 unit.
