I was just wondering what people consider some of the best mecha games on the Saturn, since there seems to be a decent amount of them, but no-one ever really talks about them.
The only mech game I've played on the Saturn in Gungriffon, which I find really fun.
I'm quite curious about A.M.O.K., too. It looks fun, but the dark graphics and short draw distance is a bit off-putting to me. I'm also wondering if there are any good Japan-only mech games, since Japan's generally quite well-known for their love of giant robots.
So, any thoughts on the genre?

A.M.O.K and Gungriffon 2 are two of my favorite games on the system, let alone mecha games. Steer clear of Mechwarrior 2, its a piss poor port and pales into insignificance next to the PC original.
Its a shame Sierras Earthseige never saw a console release, I was a massive fan of those games.

Virtual freaking ON! As far as JP games, the Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story games are completely bad ass. They'd be even more bad ass if I knew Japanese. Just as bad ass (I seem to like that term this morning) is Bulk Slash. Also, Cyberbots is a good 2D Capcom mech fighter.

A PS2 WITH... all of the Armored Core series/releases! Even perhaps back dating the PS1 releases too... Oh. Best mech games for Sega Saturn you say? Errrmm... Dunno? Krazy Ivan or Gun Griffon I guess??

Mick's post has convinced me to look for A.M.O.K., as well as GunGriffon 2. The Gundam games look really good too. And I figured Virtual On is a given!
I noticed the Japanese version of A.M.O.K. is actually in full english, with subtitles in Japanese, which I found quite bizarre. Might get the Japanese version just for the better case, if I see it cheap enough.

Yeah, A.M.O.K is an excellent game. Great graphics and controls, challenging but fun and an awesome soundtrack.

I'm not sure its what you are looking for but Assault Suit Leynos 2, is a side scrollling run and gun game featuring a customisable mech.
The first game was released in the west as Target Earth, but I think the second is a Japan exclusive (I may be wrong though).
If this is your cup of tea, you may want to look at Wolf Fang SS, another shmuppy run and gun featuring a customisable mech. Its not as good as Leynos though, in my opinion.
"Also, Cyberbots is a good 2D Capcom mech fighter. "
Yes! this game is fun, totally ridiculous and not very expensive. Anyone who like 2D fighters should give it a go. If I remember correctly Mecha Gouki is a hidden boss and you can play as a 50ft robot octopus. Whats not to like?

Sorry for digging out that old thread but I have new question about that topic. I am interested in getting one of the Gungriffon games.
Are the both equally good or is 2 prefearble over 1 or the other way arround?

Thanks for the answer. And yeah I have already considered getting both. According to the footage about the games on YT I find both games equally appealing. And the japanese copies are not that expensive anway. So there is no reason not to get both games.

The language barrier is very heavy in the sequel and I liked the setting of the 1st game more. Both are ace mind and well worth picking up

Yeah the language barrier for the second game is indeed a problem. It just come in Japan so there is no western version to check on youtube if something is unclear while playing the japanese one.

AMOK is an acquired taste, it has graphics that look off putting and weird (unique voxel landscape), but it's a decent game underneath. The map makes it easier to navigate despite the short draw distance, and there's even a bunch of secret stuff on levels. The levels are large and fairly open too, so there's plenty to explore. It's a bit slow paced for my tastes but that's cause I prefer fast arcade titles.
Cyberbots kicks a lot of ass, one of the most heavy metal games on the console. It plays atypical for a Capcom fighter, you only have a weak/strong punch, a weapon, and a jet booster buttons. It's a bit like the SNES Dragon Ball fighters, except the booster is for doing multiple jumps or hovering in the air. Also the backgrounds are super detailed with a lot of animation, my favourite is the space station that falls out of orbit, it slowly turns from a dark outer space scenery into a blazing red inferno as the station melts away from the heat of re-entry.
There are the two Gungriffon games and like half a dozen Gundams, but I did not play those. Sakura Taisen is an SRPG/visual novel hybrid but it has some mechas to fight in.
Thunder Force V is a normal shmup but there's a bunch of mecha enemies with upgrades and transformations to fight, some of them look really rad. You get a spaceship upgrade too mid-game, and you can laser down star destroyer fleets for that one level.
Virtual On is an obvious choice, it's a 1v1 third person fighter iirc.
Robo Pit was on every machine at the time, you basically build your robot and have it fight other robots in pit fights. Then buy upgrades, new parts, you can change stuff in and out entirely. It's not bad, but more like a low budget game.

Yeah. Another classic that Bernie and co never brought over. I also really enjoyed Bulk Slash it was a great showcase for Saturn visuals, but again the language barrier was heavy. I'm on my own, but I quite enjoyed Deadlus and Shellshock too

@team Andromeda Yes that is right. So many great Saturn Games never made it to the west due to some fishy decisions from Mr Bernie The Saturn is not over future stolar. I ordered Gun Griffion 1 and 2 in the mean time by the way. Cannot way to play them. I have also watched some footage of Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story. I am not familar with the franchise at all but the game looks rather promising. Maybe I am getting it as well at some point in the future.
