I got a Saturn off ebay that is slowly draining money out of me, but I refuse to let it die when I know exactly how to save it. All I need is a working drive and I am good to go. I am hoping somebody out there in internetland will be able to assist a fellow gamer. My other thread is linked at the bottom, but you're pretty much up to speed already. The drive I need is for a Model 2 Saturn with a 32-pin IC chip and a 21-pin ribbon cable. A version .0014 board. JVC assembly. My failed drive is from a VA6 motherboard revision. I can use a drive from VA6-VA9. The machine in question is NTSC but to my understanding the drives are not region locked so PAL or JPN will work as well. I do not need a ribbon cable, laser or anything else, I just need a working drive! If you have one you can part with PLEASE PM me!! My Saturn would greatly appreciate it. I realize I am looking for a unicorn here so I should mention I am willing to pay for the part, I am not looking for handouts. Thanks in advance!! I just wanted to update this stating I have found a working drive assembly from a fellow off of the racketboy forums. My Saturn is now working.
Thanks all for looking!

I know this is quite old but I am once again on the hunt for this exact same part - a working CD board for a VA7 mobo. I would also accept a Sanyo drive since it is what this current unit actually has.
Throwing a prayer out to the Saturn Gods. Haha.

Awesome. Thanks. I actually started on Ebay and only found Model 1 drives (for offensive markup too). I've reached out to the seller. I will keep everybody posted.

Well, the seller wouldn't ship to Canada. After inquiring about arranging an American buyer and getting a single unit, the seller edited his ad. It was no longer a lot of 5 untested drives for $60 OBO, it was a single drive for $60 OBO. Needless to say, I won't be doing business with this seller. Hopefully, none of you have to deal with Conrad773 either. Seems like a real class act...
The hunt continues!

Well, I tracked a potential drive down, in Canada nonetheless. It wasn't working 100% when the drive got pulled for a MODE, told them I was still interested. Unfortunately, the seller has been watching Storage Wars... They wanted $50 for the drive. Considering I paid $23~ for the entire system, I am not about to get gouged like that.
For reference, I paid $8 for the drive in 2013 (I paid $10 for a broken system at the time.) I don't expect to get one that cheap in 2021 but 100% more than a broken system is absurd.
The saga continues...

anything Saturn related is really over priced in Canada. Pretty rare to find anything Saturn up here, even in the big cities.

I have been stalking other Saturn hangouts. I noticed the folks at reddit (r/SegaSaturn) seem to put a lot of ODEs in. I have signed up for a membership there in hopes of finding me a member who just dropped an ODE in.
I'm cold calling and beggin' at this point. Ha ha.

Well, I finally found one after making a thread and asking a half dozen members. I've got a region free BIOS, FRAM, and modchip on the way. Fancy mods are pretty much the only way I'll break even with what I've got into this thing. Ha ha.

There's a bunch of EXL-P604 drives on ebay which MAYBE could be modded to work on the VA6-9 units, since the only difference is that the P604 supplies the drive access led on a pin where the P605 expects a duplicate of the clock signal... all you'd need is to desolder a resistor and bridge two pins with a wire. I've never tried it however (on the other hand I remember once mixing the two drives with a modchip attached and then they worked on the wrong model - but I don't remember the details). If you are into crazy mods you may as well try that.
But the drives I see on ebay right now are all in Europe, so probably too expensive to ship to canada.

It is funny you mention this because I noticed after it shipped that the drive was a 604, not a 605. I had just taken a quick glance at the board. After taking a closer look at the pics, I realized my error. I will see how it all works with a modchip installed. If not, which resistor do I need to remove and which connection do I need to jumper? That doesn't seem like a big hassle.
