Saturn Jenga, mixed with Space Invaders in an isometric view?!?!
EDIT: That sounds crap really.
To be honest, id like a SHMUP, especially if it's easy to program. Pretty pseudo 3D sprites and solid gameplay and scoring. Maybe call it like 'Forlorn-Gold-whip' where your special weapon is a massive whip ;D.

Experimenting can be fun, but it may make things a bit difficult since for many this will be a learning experience. So doing a well defined genre gives people well defined standards they can compare to. I personally would like to do an RPG. While the Saturn does have some nice RPGs, it doesn't really have a lot that compare well to what's on say the PS1, or even the SNES for that matter.
Also if we wanted to try and push really pretty graphics, an RPG would be the genre to do it with since you could have perfect control over camera movements and character positions.

I had a mad idea of restoring the Saturn version of Destruction Derby 2 - Doesn't someone here have a copy of it? Bit off topic, but thought it could be dropped in for an idea.

What about Saturn Doom, done properly? Now that it's in the public domain. You'd only have a target framerate of about 18 for it to be running smoother than the original SS version.

ROFL Actually that DOES sound like a good project to work on! Saturn gets a horrible rep for its port of Doom, so it would be neat to finally show people that the Saturn COULD in fact run it properly when coded right. I like that idea a lot Rossi. @trekkies: Ok if we do RPG, and you want it pretty... better hope another artist steps up.

Saturn Doom (as is common knowlege), was utter shoite. I've harboured a secret longing for years to see it done properly.

Well I believe ChillyWilly over at Sega-16 plans on doing a Saturn Port of Doom once he does his 32X port. So I wouldn't want to steal his thunder on that.
One thought I did have if we want to do something to just get our feet wet is we could try hacking the the ports of Sonic in Sonic Jam and perhaps try turning one of them into Sonic CD.

Oh ok.
As far as hacking Sonic Jam... eh... see, with porting Doom we have access to the source code. I'm nowhere near experienced enough to decompile games into human readable machine code and figure stuff out that way from scratch. Just no way unless we have a hacker amongst us.
Turning a game in Sonic Jam into Sonic CD is a lot harder than one would imagine. We would actually have an easier time just re-writing the game for the Saturn.

I think something very simple would be the best thing first so that it was easy to stick to.
There must be a reason why alot of projects start, then die for the Saturn...

The 32x has the same CPU(s) as the Saturn, would it not be possible to port a 32x game and then modify accordingly?

The graphics coding would have to be redone.
What on earth is on the 32X that you would want to play on the Saturn?!

I was thinking more about Doom, not played the Saturn port, but I found the 32x one to be decent, would it not be easier to do that if the Saturn port is really that bad?

You would also still need the source code.
So it seems the two main ideas we have here are a platformer and an RPG.
For the RPG idea I think it would be best to start off with just trying to get an engine up and working for it. And even that alone would be a nice release allowing people to make RPGs for the Saturn. At that point we could simply use place holder assets just to demo it. I know a lot of the Final Fantasy models have been ripped and are available on a few sites.
Then from there we could go into making our own unique game.

2D RPG or 3D RPG?

I'd personally prefer to do a 3D one, but if the general consensus is for 2D we can do that. For a 3D one I was thinking along the lines of PS1 Final Fantasy games.
