However, it should be noted that Core had also planned for a Saturn version of Ninja, which later appeared on the PlayStation in radically altered form (presumably to take full advantage of its extra performance).
What do you mean with extra performance??? the saturn version was initially planned as a worst game?

Formula One was briefly mentioned in SSM, and I can confirm that Saturn+ did indeed review Deadly Skies, though I've not been able to find out (yet) if this game received a Japanese release or if it was cancelled even there. I seem to have confused saturnworship, so let me rephrase on the subject of Ninja: the final PlayStation version included certain graphical features (such as multiple layer translucency effects) that would probably not have been possible on the Saturn, which suggests that Core adopted a remake/overhaul approach as opposed to just porting their earlier code for the Sega platform.
With hindsight it has now been revealed that the Saturn was capable of not only matching but surpassing all rival systems of the same period, even if few programmers outside of Sega's own AM and CS departments could ever have reached the same levels of technical performance as titles like Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon Saga, or the unreleased "Shenmue" prototype and Virtua Fighter 3. Of course, since the latter has still yet to be seen in any shape or form in its 32-bit guise, the reality could be a major disappointment. Then again, Yu Suzuki promised something at least faithful to the Model 3 source and I've never had a reason to doubt AM2's talent when it comes to arcade conversions - unless you find it hard to see past the cosmetic faults of Daytona USA in its PAL form...

If memory serves me correctly, Deadly Skies was also previewed in Saturn+ around the same time. Does anybody know with any certainty what happened to this game?

Saturn + reviewed Deadly Skies! I think it was held back for the Dreamcast. The was a playable demo given away with Saturn+ issue 2.

I didn't know about there being a demo of Deadly Skies given away with the second volume of Saturn+ (ironically the only issue of that magazine I have yet to acquire), and thinking I might have discovered officially released playable code of an unreleased title I searched further and can reveal this game was indeed released in Japan - more specifically, on the 28th of June, 1996. There was also a port released for the PlayStation around this same time, though I don't think Konami based the much later Dreamcast edition on this...

I don't have the demo now, but I recently read the reference to it in the mag. I'll take a pic later if I can find it.

Two words: Broken. Sword. The Knight's Templer.
Actually, that's 5 words...
It doesn't really matter now that I have it on PC, but at the time when I was crazy about playing Blazing Dragons on the Saturn, playing Broken Sword would have put me in eztasy.

I always was looking forward to Heart of Darkness. The previews always seemed to make it look amazing. Years later I was gutted when I finally got the PS1 version. It's shoite.

I was kind of hoping that Real Bout 2 and KoF '98 would be released on the Saturn, along with some SNK collections like a collection with the first few Fatal Fury games on it, similar to what Capcon did for it's Street Fighter Collections.
And if the rumours of Biohazard 2 were true and that was going to be released on the Saturn, I would have loved that to see what it would have been like.

Don't get your hopes up, for the Saturn version of Biohazard 2 was supposedly just 15% complete when director Shinji Mikami cancelled the project. Of course, that's not to say that media won't surface one day...
