Popular opinion said the Saturn couldn't do 3D like the playstation. The Saturn ran some excellent PC FPS ports in 3D by Lobotomy.

I haven't had much experience with Saturn FPS, really only a backup of Duke 3D I made that I made in order to practice the swap trick on my Saturn, I've only played it a couple times. Quake looks awesome, but I have it on my PC so I see little point in getting (I have the N64 port, too). I have been contemplating getting Saturn Doom for a while, but I may just try to look for a copy/ISO of the Jpn. version, b/c it's quite scarce (and yes, the rumours are true that Jpn. Saturn Doom does have a much better framerate; pretty much PSX Doom for the Saturn).

The later levels of Saturn Doom have a frame rate that resembles a fcuking slide-show. Calling it a piss-poor conversion would be like saying that Hitler was a bit naughty.

I've seen vids of those later maps, I think I could safely say that 3D0 Doom can get better performance than some of those levels. I'm still wondering why Sega didn't get someone like Lobotomy (who had proven they could create impressive ports of shooters) to program the game rather than these idiots at Rage Software.

I think Quake deserves a mention here, the Saturn version was by far the best available, even compared to the PC version when It was run on PC hardware at the time, the Saturn version scrapped the quake engine and used the much more fluid Slavedriver engine, thanks to the Saturn's larger memory it's also the only console version to feature all the levels full size, complete and unedited.

I'll pick Alien Trilogy. I have very fond memories of being low on ammo and scarred. The sound from the motion tracker always made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Fun times.

This is a weired one because I hated FPS back in the day. I think it was because I had only played shitty versions and it made me hate them. These are the ones I tried back then.
Doom (32x) Alien Trilogy (Saturn) Quake (Dreamcast) Duke Nuken land of the babes (Playstation 1)
Altho I did love Shellshocked on the Saturn (ok your in a tank but it is FP). But now with the 360 I love FPS.

Duke Nukem 3D was awesome back in the 90s, still good now.
Quake - I use to think it was great, hasn't aged so well though.
Alien Trilogy - loved it, still quite good now.

There is an article in SSM where a Lobotomy team member confirmed that some levels did need to be redesigned slightly for Quake on the Saturn, although not to the same degree as other conversions I could think of - the Nintendo 64 edition, perhaps?

Yeah i think i would choose Duke Nukem aswell although i never finished the saturn version as i had bought the PS1 version first which between the two i prefer mainly as the soundtrack is better imo. Quake was good on the saturn and probably one of the games which surprised me in how well it played as at the time i had never played a FPS on the saturn. Duke on the N64 was good but it had no bloody music although i did really like duke Zero hour. Today i just love farcry lol much better than halo,i gotta admit though i'm useless at playing FPS on a mouse/keyboard,really cant stand it lol to used to a joypad. Never played Exhumed on the saturn although i have it on the playsation, which one is the better port?Anyone tried both?

PSX Exhumed was terrible compared to the Saturn version. It had glitchy, framerate issues and is generally considered inferior to the Saturn Exhumed.

I still play Saturn DooM from time to time, but find that the DooM 2 levels are almost unplayable, and it's not a quality product.
I enjoyed Hexen a lot, but a bit more variety would have helped. Oh, plus the game's save file was ENORMOUS.
I really didn't like Quake at all ... it was too clunky and nasty for me, I hated the controls and weapons, the weapons all seemed to be shorter-range than they should have been, the music was apalling as were the sound effects, and it looked so godawful despite The Master raving about it =(
Duke Nukem 3D on the other hand I personally loved, and it's easily the best console version available, but I only played the shareware episode of the PC version, so I don't know what I'm missing (if anything), but it was a bit rough/dull looking. The super efficient game engine is what won me over.
Exhumed was astonishingly good at the time, but the enemies dissapointed me even way back when, but like Duke Nukem 3D, the speed and general solid structure of the game made it so sweet to play. The jumping parts of the levels could be abject torture at times, and this is what ultimately made me abandon it.
Does Gun Griffon count ? I love that one =)
Alien Trilogy was a little too dull for my liking, plus is you played it on even the normal difficulty setting, ammo could run extremely thin at times (usually in the worst possible situation) and I never quite understood how Ripley could survive having all of those face-huggers tearing from her body ...
I'd like to play the Gundam Side Story games some time, I saw them in action and the idea of Gun Griffon with swords is so cool ^__^ !
Robotica is horrible and makes me feel ill after only a few minutes of play.
Ghen War was another stinker, but the Americans generally seem to like it.
Crazy Ivan was a simple bit of fun, but far too easy.
I would say Duke Nukem 3D was probably my favorite Saturn FPS for the sheer speed alone, but being challenging (since the other Saturn FPS really weren't) helped a whole bunch until you figure out the best course of action in each level, then it's a little on the easy side.
That said, classic DooM is my favorite FPS of all time. Always found games such as Half Life to be a little too dull (and the console conversions of The Orange Box are some of the worst I have ever seen; they even ruined the gameplay). I also like Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, though I understand that most people can't find even the most thinly veiled keys so decide to tell everyone it's poo =/
(there should be more shooters like Serious Sam)
Saturn FPS Trivia - David Deinstbier had originally planned to make Turok: Dinosaur Hunter on Saturn, but then the N64 arrived, they made one of the best games for it (as in Turok), then ruined the franchise with a slew of worthless sequels.

I LOVED Exhumed and completed it with all team dolls TWICE!
Too hard? Not in my opinion. Rewarding is the word!
Alien Trilogy was just a joke in software form. I completed it and then sold it.
