Playing Atlantis: The Lost Tales. And the puzzles are really obscure and random. =/ Anyone got tips for the Hen Puzzle in the old lady's hut in Carbonek? The PC Walkthroughs I found on the net explain the order you need to arrange the cogs, and then tell you to pull the right chord, as the left resets things. However, on the Saturn, the right chord resets things...so I should pull the left chord right? Ahh..only, whether I'm pulling left or right, I get no eggs. =( And I fear the cog order must be different for the Saturn. Anyone got through this, and know how they did it? There seems to be no logic or skill to this puzzle, so am just doing random trial and error in the hopes of achieving a fluke....but it's driving me bonkers. Especially since even the solution on the internet for PC, doesn't seem to work for this Saturn version! =P Nnngg..... In short, I did what was described here: www.gameboomers.com/wtcheats/pcAa/ALT.htm#Old%20woman's%20cave ...and yet that achieves sod all in the Saturn version. Any advice on what I need to do differently?

Could you take some screenshots of the saturn puzzle: uncompleted, completed like for the PC version ? Also, where is the egg on the screenshots ? I like cogs puzzle, but I don't see how it must completed from the screenshots on the site you mentionned, because I don't see where is the egg and so how the mechanism must work.

If this can help you, here is how I determine how the cogs will turn:

No...no...you don't understand. This is Atlantis: The Lost Tales - the puzzles do not make sense, there is not any logic to them, nor skill involved in solving them. ^_^ An online review called the puzzles obtuse, whilst Wikipedia claims: "Some puzzles are extremely abstract and the solution is completely unexpected". ^_^ SSM rated it 65% with Lee Nutter calling it "disappointing from start to finish". =)
But I appreciate you taking the time to help. Not sure if I can face the game again so soon...but will doubtlessly try again in due course. To answer your questions... the shots look pretty much exactly the same complete and uncompleted, in the Saturn version, as they do in the PC version, except.. * The cog with the yellow swirl (the one touching the topmost big disc) doesn't look like it's touching both cogs, it's placed between. If you swap it over with the similar sized red swirled cog on the far right, then everything looks like it's touching everything, but still, this doesn't appear to be the solution. * If you pull the right chord, all cogs fall off the wall, and the puzzle is reset. If you pull the left chord, the bottom cog turns, but no cogs touching it animate. * The Eggs aren't visible. I believe they magically appear at the bottom once you've put the cogs in the desired order.

Hang on....since in the PC version you pull the right chord, but in the Saturn version you pull the left chord, ..that means the bottom wheel is turning the opposite way than the PC version...so maybe I need the cogs in some kinda opposite arrangement!? =P Meh.

I understood your problem I checked some mags at home and I found the complete walkthrough for the saturn version. Basically, the cogs must be placed at the same place (from memory as I read it quickly this morning) but you need to pull the left chord, yep (maybe 4 times also). I will check tonight at home with the mag in front of me and the picture I posted from your link, and I will tell you if the cogs are really at the same places. Btw, the old lady seems to be a witch according to my mag

Yeah, she's a witch. ^_^ She made a wall appear where there wasn't one, and I got to be invisible to guards chasing me, simply by closing my eyes. ^_^
Pray tell...what mag did a complete solution?

the solution was published by a french mag: playmag (playstation mag) but they also have a saturn branch and they did some special released called "la bible des secrets saturn". The complete solution of Atlantis can be found on volume 6 of these special releases. According to the solution and if I understand correctly (the mag is in B&W), here are the differences with the previous image: Move the cog accordingly. The smallest cog not golden must be at the far right. Then pull the left chord (probably 4 times). Let me know if it works.

Am just so impressed at how helpful you've been. My taste in games is pretty obscure, so it really shows what the SegaSaturn.co.uk Forum community can be/mean, when I can post some obscure problem with some obscure game, on the board, that not even google could solve, and voilà - help and advice is at hand - so thanks - I appreciate the time taken.
Speaking of taking time though, my Saturn is playing up at the moment. Not only am I having trouble loading the Atlantis disk, but my memory just went, so I've lost my save game, and am gonna have to work my way back to this puzzle.
Still, when I do get to it again, I'll try this out, and let you know how I fare.

you're welcome I am sad to read that you lose your saves Good luck for playing the game from the beginning again (this is something I never did when I lose saves, I am too demoralized by this). And let me know when you reach this puzzle again. I also have the walkthrough of frankenstein and riven on the same mag, if someone is interested

^_^ Hey - I'm aware of my system memory problems, and RAM cart occaisional wipes. I had taken the precaution of backing up every now and again to my Action Replay Pro cart. As such, am not starting from the very beginning ....just the Palace Library section....but that's still quite a fair way back! =P But not quite as bad as starting from the very beginning.
I already have SSM's Riven guide, so should be fine there. But may purchase Frankenstein in due course, so who knows, maybe I'll be back pleading for help in due course.
To be honest though, I feel a little soft turning to guides. Maybe I need to experience what it's like to pull your hair out over a game for weeks on end, and then finally have a eureka moment(!). Having said that, I did the Snake puzzle in Atlantis all by myself. =D =( But I needed to turn to a guide to find that damn stick to knock the guard out with afterwards...it was lost against the background....never even saw it. I turned to the guide and it said to pick up a stick, and I was like: "There's a stick!? I'd walked about the whole place several times, and never noticed"...*Oooh the shame*=P

When I played at Jewel of the oracle, there are some part where I also never saw something on floor or wall, then after reading a walkthrough I said to myself: "hey, where the fuck are this or this ? I never saw them!". I understand what you feel in such a moment

Well, it's annoying, because it's immediately following a cutscene, so the item is pretty much infront of you when the scene reloads. I'd redone that scene a fair few times - so I wasn't something you had to walk around to find - it's leaning against the wall to the right of you...but it just looked like dodgy Saturn textures, to be honest. I tell you - reading that you had to pull the chord 4 times on the Egg/Hen puzzle shocked me as well. "There's a chord?" It's pretty impossible to see at first on the Saturn. You can only just about make out the hoops on the end of each end of the chord...but the chord itself is wafer thin, and lost against the background texture....like trying to see a string of black cotton in the dark. =P ^_^ Unless my eyes need testing, or my TV is naff at contrast. Here's a strange one though - some PC Magazine I got in the mid 90s had a Return to Zork guide, and it looked kinda interesting. Some websites list "Saturn" as one of the formats it was on. =P Yet I've never seen a Saturn version....is it an error? Or is it just super rare? OMG! Just seen the Jap Saturn version on ebay for 1p. =P So it does exist! cgi.ebay.co.uk/Return-to-Zork-Sega-Saturn-JP-IMPORT_W0QQitemZ180211520814QQihZ008QQcategoryZ62053QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p1638.m122

Hep, 2 Zork games came on the SS: Zork I and Return to Zork. Then they did a pack with the 2 games, called Zork collection (it is Zork I + a revised/bug fixes version of return to zork). Both of them are full japanese if I remember correctly. Both of them are also cheap to get, so try to get them complete (spin, reg for both and the goodies for return to zork).
