I played it again this morning and was pleasantly surprised at how playable it acually is. I have memories of not liking the handling very much, but today I got on really well with it. The point to point tracks are my faveourite ( they look similar to the Road Rash ones) Is it liked on these boards? This is the PC version, I think:

I used to have it on the PS1, if the Saturn version is any good I may have to track a copy down as I loved the PS1 version, despite it's many flaws.

That's what happens You spend £40 on a game back in the day and it turns out to be not so good. Ten years later, the same game can be had for very little money, but we're reluctant to shell out even a tiny amount because of bad memories. I generally find that the games get better with age and the fact that they cost next to nothing now makes them taste sweeter. NFS rocks when you pick it up for 99p!

NFS is ok, if you're looking for handling along the lines of Daytona or Sega Rally then you will be dissapointed, but the sluggish handling perfectly replicates the handling you get at very high speeds in those sort of cars. It does get very boring, very quickly.
Personally I would say, pick it up cheap, but dont spend good money on it.

I have good memories in 2-player challenges. If you have somebody that plays Saturn with you its good times.

I actually really enjoyed this back in the day. I prefered the point to point races too. I always went for the head to head mode even when playing 1 player as you got to race with civillian traffic in the roads which made the races more interesting.

I have the 3DO version, it's much better, nicer framerate and slightly better visuals!

I found NFS to be really slow and from what I remember the tracks were more or less straight lines.
I've always been one for arcade racers though =)
(was playing SEGA Rally Evo last night <3)

OMG i re-bought need for speed after this thread was made and got it today, gotta say im loving it! i really think its a great racer (head to head mode is my fav) so much better than i remembered it being, the only jipe i have is the steering is a bit dodgy on some corners you can flip out easily since the normal brake does fuck all the handbrake is sometimes needed, it is a realistic game though and i like it for that

That's the spirit! NFS rocks! My 4 year old son reckons the screeching tyres sound like the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park! Once he said that, I couldn't think of anything else. Try it and see

I always liked NFS. Cant remember the Saturn version being up to much though. That said I agree that if I can find it cheap then I'll give it a go.

Man, that game's hard... I spent like 1.5 hour today with it and I only won one single race in tournament mode, handling feels a little too tight but I'm getting to grips with it but aside from that it's a really good game.

I absolutely love Need For Speed, and I'm with all of you who prefer the point-to-point races as opposed to the more conventional closed circuits. Saying that, can anyone survive a full lap of the Lost Vegas track with the hidden Warrior car without crashing spectacularly? Honestly, even years later I still find this an impossible challenge! With the exception of a brief acquaintance with the special edition for PC, I've never played any of the other NFS versions so I'm not sure about any specific graphical or gameplay differences. However, one thing I do recall is the open courses not being split into three parts - could someone please confirm this, as I'd be much happier if I could enjoy my favourite tracks without the obvious separation. I presume this was done (if at all, as my memory could be playing tricks on me here) due to RAM limitations in the Saturn port, though naturally I could be totally wrong on this one...
