I remember when that game first came out, I was calling around stores and no one had the damn game. I kept calling and calling and nothing even Funcoland had no idea what the game was, in fact almost no one had any idea what that game was. It was like looking for something that didn't exist. I have no idea what the problem was (maybe a release date issue?) Either way I never ended up getting the game and at the time it seemed really cool and I wanted that game badly. Now I'm not really as interested in playing it but who knows, I just wish someone would of helped me out at the time .

That's a shame it's a great game still good for a blast even today, it's been ages since I've played it to be honest but just fancied it the other day so been playing though it unlocking the hidden characters again. Yeah I remember back in the day if my local game shops 2 or 3 of them there were didn't have something I was after that was pretty much the end of that I wouldn't have been able to get hold of it

I just finished playing and reviewing it. The video will be up in a few days when I get my act together. Here's a spoiler for you: I liked it. It was fun. The reason all the LB characters weren't in it is because LB came out afterwards by a month or two. I liked that game, too.

Fighters Megamix is great.
Just.
Whatever you do.
DON'T PLAY THE PAL VERSION/PLAY IT ON A PAL/50HZ CONSOLE.
It's slow as sh*t and nowhere as enjoyable as it's speedy and slick 60Hz counterpart!
It makes the game 100x better...

I assumed that Sega would have PAL optimised Fighters Megamix. Genuinely surprised at that.
(I have the PAL and JPN versions - never compared them. Haven't played either in ages).

Davyk, you have to understand that just because a game was 'PAL optimised', it didn't necessarily run at full speed. For example, Fighters Megamix WAS PAL optimised (full screen display) but still didn't run at the full speed of the Japanese release. In fact, none of the optimised titles did. You just have to compare the PAL with US/JP titles to see for yourself. Again, seeing as Quake was PAL optimised, the NTSC version runs at NTSC vs PAL speeds, and makes the game (imo) much more enjoyable in the process, not unlike Fighters Megamix. They just make for a much smoother, more fluid experience. I own US versions of Quake, DN3D and FMMix only, just for this reason (FMMix for the English command lists/training mode etc)

PAL optimised will mean speed adjustment and/or full screen. I don't always expect to get both. It also doesn't always mean it runs at NTSC speed either. It depends how it was done.
Frame skipping is the quickest and nastiest way of doing it and it could result in problems with collision detection (for example Gamecube Ikaruga in PAL use frame skips and apparently there are bugs in the game re missile collision that the hardcore can detect.) A better way would be to adjust how much something (a car, a bullet etc) moves per frame so that it equals NTSC speeds - this could result in choppier animation though - so maybe the full adjustment isn't made to retain smoothness while adding SOME speed to rectify the difference.
With respect to full screen optimisation a PAL optimised game may overscan at 60Hz resulting is loss of image at the bottom of the screen - but that doesn't mean it has been speed adjusted necessarily.
I have a few double dip titles but I haven't really compared them thoroughly. I have compared Athlete Kings and Decathlon. In PAL there are borders but the game at least feels to run as quickly. However the JPN title has occasional clipping issues and on balance I actually prefer the PAL version.
Maybe speed optimisations with that type of game are easier - take the running events - code "just" needs to move you down the track a bit more per frame in order to keep up with NTSC - but with a fighting game it wouldn't be as easy as that due to complexities with collision detection etc.
A PAL version of a game that pushes the hardware and has occasional slowdown in NTSC at 60Hz may actually run a bit smoother without slowdown in PAL.

btw in regards to Fighters Megamix the intro has fantastic music and it's quite sharp too. I love the fact that it's full screen. I remember my mates who were just spoilt with the tekken intros were liking the light hardheartedness of this. Fighters Megamix at that point had the most varied and one of the largest rosters of players ever. Jane from Vitua Cop was my fave mostly because AM2 modeled her off from Aoi. I really felt that AM2 should have added Sonic in that roster and if I can recall correctly in an interview with AM2 in the official Sega saturn mag, they left sonic out because of something like they wanted Fighters Megamix to represent an AM2 game..... after all Sonic was a Sonic team creation... The Western release is iirc censored too. These pics particularly Honey and Tokio were censored. The only thing I think the western versions have over the japanese one is the music doesn't restart every round.

Don't ruin it, I have a review for it coming up! Fear not! This game has been around for nearly 20 years. I'm sure it's being reviewed is already a well trodden path as is...

Does anyone know how to unlock the extra options? It isn´t in any guide or anything. I have the Japanese version and the options contains BGM, EDING BGM, PORTRAIT, and BOOK KEEP with 5 rows of question marks in between. I presume these are unlockable options. I´ve beaten all the main courses, so not sure what these options are for.
I kinda hoped there would be a gallery where the ending photos appear after their first appearance.
