I beat the Player Vs. Computer mode on Normal difficulty yesterday. With credits to spare. I actually reached the "final boss" in his "first form" with eight credits left; I had lost one to the girl with the pigtails, and that's it. Lost a credit each to the boss's two forms, but wasn't too much of a problem. The ending is pretty nice, too.
The Puzzle mode is still tough as nails, though.

Awesome to hear, martiniii! Good to know you're enjoying the game. I know you still have a bit to get through on this game but do you have any plans to buy any other games?

Forgot to post here that I finally managed to get the hang of Puzzle Mode. I've already reached four of the seven endings (the marriage one made me chuckle) on normal mode. The key? I realized that puzzle mode is in fact turn-based. In my defense, the game does a pretty good job of making it seem like it's in real time. The way the orbs tremble before the layer comes down another level really made me feel like I was on the clock. Anyway, now that I'm not frantically shooting each orb into the first place that comes to mind, I can really kick butt on Puzzle Mode. I'm taking a break from the game for now, though; don't want to rip through all the levels in my first month with the game.

CPU mode is also turn based by the way. The quicker you go, the faster the bubbles come down, but at the same time, if you take too long the CPU will send too many bubbles your way, which appear the next time you fire.
It's actually a strategy to wait out your opponent if you're both screwed and about to die to see who ends up suiciding first. At that point firing is a death sentence.

Do the sequels add much content? I've been looking to get a copy of Puzzle Bobble for the 3DO, but don't know if the Saturn ones are significantly better.

Puzzle Bobble on the 3DO is basically a port of the 16-bit versions (i.e. SNES) instead of a port of the NeoGeo original. If you want the most well rounded version of the bunch, you can't go wrong with Puzzle Bobble 2/Bust a Move 2 for Saturn. Can't comment on 3, as it looked like more of the same with more characters but short on charm...?

#3 was awful. AI is dumber in it too. You can literally beat half the game by doing nothing but letting the game sit there and have the CPU kill itself.

Yeah, I had started to notice that, too. Haven't gotten much use out of it yet, since usually when the bubbles get down to the bottom of my screen, the CPU opponent is doing just fine. It's a nice strategy to keep in your toolbox, though.

Who plays BAM for the vs CPU mode? Surely Puzzle mode for 1 player or 2 player versus are the main events?

The vs. CPU mode ain't bad. It's a unbalanced, but it's an overall good challenge and a decent enough substitute for those of us who don't have another Saturn enthusiast available to join the fun.

I always preferred the puzzle mode for 1 player. BAM 3 has an addictive challenge mode for 1 player too.

That NA Saturn cover art is awful. It alone probably drove away potential buyers. It could be mistaken for a creepy Japanese game.
