Backward-compatability is the way forward..I think.. seriously - I'm all for it yes and no to this rossi...... Invariably making a console backwards compatible ups the cost of the machine, on top of the money you laid out for a previous machine.....as in the case of the euro ps3 having backwards compatiblility to ps1 removed to save money( we pay more though?) This means more redundant pieces of plastic, not a good thing. From a consumers point of view it is probably good and having less consoles suits some people. I like playing my games on their original consoles and having lots of consoles......but I have the collectors sickness and room

Speaking of Playstation 3, doesn`t that have like multiple processors or something like that? If that`s the case (or not the case) I wonder how it would emulate the Sega Saturn...
But doesn`t the Xbox 360 also have multiple processors?
I do agree though. I much prefer having the original machines to play the games than to have backwards compatibility. It`d be like having an emulator. It just doesn`t have the same feeling you know and love.

The PS3 had multiple cores not processors, while most people consider them to be the same thing multiple core processors are on one chip and share many rescources such as I/O and cache. Because they share these rescources and do not have their own cache memory etc. for each individual processor some problems can occur when emulating other multiple-processor or symetrical-multi-processor systems.
Seeing as the PS3 has 8 cores though you could dedicate 2 processor cores to the emulation of each Saturn processor, which would probably more than make up for the bottleneck.

The videogame world needs backwards compatibility in therms of originality and quality...
Someone must take captive some journalists, and send video death threats to everyone that tries to do the next "shoot'em up" without originality, or the next Final Fantasy.
Sorry about my english.

I don't prefer having multiple machines in the house. One of the reasons why I only owned a PC and no consoles for a few years was because of the clutter.
Every so often I keep thinking to myself either the Saturn or the Dreamcast has to go. I just cannot stand seeing so much game equipment laying around. I have 4 arcade sticks - 2 Saturn ones, 2 dreamcast, a Saturn arcade racer, a Dreamcast Ferrari wheel (about to buy my second), plenty of pads and two of each console.
To me money isn't too much of an issue. I'd happily pay another £100 or whatever if I could have a single machine that could play both console games and cut my clutter in half.
Luckily, soon a PC emulator should be capable of playing all my Saturn games WITH gamepad compatability should mean I could sell the hardware and just keep the games. If only SSF would work with my gamepad I'd be free of all this sodding Saturn hardware.
Until then, I'm in the same bind.
I would always favour one system that emulates all games.

I can't imagine ever viewing the hardware as something negative. Terra - send it to me, mate! It'll get a loving reception up here!! ;D

I can see why collectors find this so hard to understand, but not everyone has the space to fit numorous consoles and accessories in. If you've got the cash, I'd be happy for you to take my two Saturn arcade sticks and arcade racer

Isn't part of the issue that the Saturn games spun counterclockwise?

I can confirm 100% that none of my Saturns read the discs counter-clockwise.

To be fair who still plays old PS1 games on their PS2 or Xbox games on their 360?
It first its a cool idead but then theres no point. After getting my PS2 i played Grandia on it and a few others and never used my PS1 games again.
Same with the 360. Played Jet Set Radio Future on it, and now hardly use it.
Sometimes play Super Monkey Ball on it.
The point is it seems cool at first but eventually the excitement over it goes.

One of the problems with backwards compatibility (and I think this is the main reason the new 40GB PS3s aren't BC) is that it potentially takes money out of the pockets of people developing new software for the platform. If you're playing Devil May Cry for the umpteenth time, you're less likely to be buying Lair ... but who would do that anyway? But, yeah, I like having fewer consoles cluttering my room. Of course, I have a Saturn, because I can't scratch that itch on my PC.
