I used to love EA Hockey and NHLPA 93 on the Mega Drive.
Which, if any, of the Saturn hockey games are up to the standard of those classics. I'm talking fast, fun game play rather than accurate player names, stats etc.
Alternatively is there anything worthy on the PS1?

NHL All Star Hockey 98' is the best Hockey game on the Saturn IMO. Great fun to play and still looks pretty decent to this day. Stay away from NHL 98' & NHL All Star Hockey 95'. Terrible games. NHL All Star Hockney 98' is definitly the one to go for. The PAL version can be quite hard to come by though.

Unfortunately a version of NHL 94 didnt sneak onto the system like Sega CD so as far as that classic simple style you loved in 93 wont be found. Im the same way. NHL 93 for Genesis/MD was my favorite as a kid. NHL 94 obviously has the legacy in gaming history as being top, but they are mostly the same.
However like Sync said, All Star 98 plays the best. Its a re-skinned Powerplay engine from Virgin. However it just plays the best. One of the few good moves by Sega was to acquire the game and call it 1998 Sega Sports version of Hockey since the previous All Star games they put out were bad.
Despite playing the best, it lacks the frills and atmosphere EA was able to put into the earlier and later hockey games. If you want that feel NHL 97 and 98 both have it. Like Sync said, both of those EA efforts came out a bit sloppy but Ill be honest they are playable. They were more playable back in day when the competition was less. They should all be super cheap but I never know how North American sports games were distributed in Europe. Over here sports titles for Saturn are a few dollars.
Playstation, as you asked, of course has the better versions of the EA titles. NHL 99 was my first when I got my PSX and its great. NHL series went up to 2001 for PS1 here. In the States at least there were tons of ice hockey games for PS1 overall. If Im not mistaken, there was one season where 4 different ones came out. Off the top of my head you had EAs, Sonys, Fox Sports one, maybe Rock the Rink and even another.

Thanks guys. I'd prefer a Saturn game, naturally. The PAL one looks really rare and expensive. Don't think many Brits were buying Saturn hockey games anymore in '98!
Will probably go for a nice cheap disc only US version when one shows up on eBay.

Another one here for 16bit EA Hockey, also love the MegaCD version. If only the front cover on MegaCD was as good as the series, white and shite. If I remember correct the CD version was the first one by EA to feature atmos build-up in-game organ music?

SegaCD/MCD version adds some extra sound and fmv. All it really adds is loading times though But it was a nice upgrade for a classic game. They made the cover for NHL 94 and really most after it pretty plain and white. The SCD version in NA breaks it up ever so slightly with the blue margins.

What a great game that was. Fast, fun, simple to play. Quite hard to score and satisfying when you did. Siren when you score, punch ups, that ice machine going round at half time- so many nice touches. Introduced such Americanisms and hockey terms as Icing, Face Off, Power play, puck et al to this naive young English boy!

You might be right as I also remember organ music in the cart version some where, wasn't in the game for the first couple of releases though. It was nice it was added any way.

Well bugger me, what have i just picked up? A complete PAL copy of NHL All Stars '98 for the princely sum of £20. And not eBay, but the first Retro game store I tried- buried in the back stock room of the excellent Vintage Gamer near Halesowen, West Mids.

Sports is the one type of rare game that always slips through the cracks. In the US we have countless rare sports releases for all systems and they always end up priced like the rest... 1-2$. So good find for a PAL copy. In the US you can get sealed copies of NHL All Star 98 for under 15 pounds I think. Just has to do with print runs. Same goes for games like Courier Crisis and Maximum Force which are dirt cheap over here for Saturn.

NHL Breakaway 1998 is a fun title too. Much different than the EA titles, and plays a little wonky until you get used 2 it, but it can be a blast and has a fun atmosphere. Has some over the top organ playing and graphics (the puck has a coloured stream).
NHL Faceoff games on the Playstation 1 are some of the easiest and most fun NHL games I've played (For context I own NHL 91-99, 06, 08-12, and about 15 other none EA NHL games)

I've just had a look at their Facebook page, seems like a retro-gamers wet dream in there! Is it as good as I hope it is?!
