Yep. Makes it pretty ironic that the only sports game I have for the Saturn, 3D Baseball, typically goes for three digit figures. I used to have World Series Baseball and World Series Baseball 98, but after playing them a while I concluded that they weren't my particular cup of tea, and decided that if I'm going to have a baseball game on the Saturn I might as well make it one from Crystal Dynamics. Haven't gotten into it much yet, but offhand it does feel more my speed than the two World Series Baseball games. I've been meaning to ask you, what is it you like so much about Crystal Dynamics? Martinii is the reason I picked up Solar Eclipse/Titan Wars

I've been meaning to ask you, what is it you like so much about Crystal Dynamics? They were one of the main software supporters and developers of quality titles for the 3DO. I think that's where the respect emanates from, primarily. It's certainly one of the reasons I hold them in high regard. That and, as of late, they are still outputting great games...

I've never been fond of recreations of team based sports as video games. I've never played one in which I felt in control. Have enjoyed baseball games to a certain level, but more fond of stuff like tennis and golf.
I'm not a graphics whore but with sports games they matter more. Graphically these games haven't really started to look attractive until the Dreamcast/PS2/Oldbox/GC era. I liked some of the older golf and tennis games on the NES/SNES/MD but not much else.

I think that's where the respect emanates from, primarily. It's certainly one of the reasons I hold them in high regard. That and, as of late, they are still outputting great games... I didn't even know they made games for the 3DO until after I'd collected most of their Saturn games. It was one of my five main reasons for getting a 3DO. Their recent games don't factor into my liking for the company, either, since after the buyout by Eidos nearly all of the original staff departed. So I consider the Crystal Dynamics who develops Tomb Raider games and such to be a different company - they may also be a great one, but I wouldn't know as I haven't played any of their games. There are many things I like about Crystal Dynamics, since their games are quality all around and cover every genre, but the main thing that defines Crystal Dynamics to me is that their games are as challenging as they can possibly be while still being fair. I enjoy easy games as much as the next guy, but there's something about digging into a Crystal Dynamics game and finding yourself forced to call upon skills you didn't even know you had. And they're so fairly designed that after you get through that first playthrough, they seem almost easy in retrospect. My second playthrough of Solar Eclipse didn't have a single "Game Over", and when I finally beat The Horde, I felt like I could have tackled another eight years of fending off hordlings and raising cows in some inhospitable wasteland.

Also add to what everyone else has written: Tennis Arena NBA Action 98' Fire Pro Wrestling Six Man Scramble Madden 98' Victory Boxing Minnesota Fats Pool Legend All good games. Personally I think Winter Heat is better than Athlete Kings. Athlete Kings lack of 4 player mode lets it seriously down IMO. Plus the AI is not competitive enough, even on the hardest difficulty the AI's efforts are a joke. That's not to say I don't love the game though. Fire pro is on my to get list big big fan Well you won't be dissapointed. IMO Fire Pro Wrestling Six Man Scramble IS the best sports game on the Saturn, closely followed by Victory Boxing & Winter Heat. Once you recieve Fire Pro it's best to name translate asap as there is over 100 wrestlers in the game which can get confusing unless you know who you are looking at.

These have been mentioned but every iteration of World Series Baseball is solid. NHL All-Star Hockey '98 is the best hockey title on the system. Winter Heat is my personal favorite sports title. Sega Worldwide Soccer '97 is a blast as is NBA Jam TE.

Ohh man a sports game thread, this is my area Alot of the games mentioned already are pretty great but I got a few left to mention. J-league Victory goal 97 (JPN import). Not much of a soccer guy myself but me and my buddies really enjoy playing this game. The controls are pretty solid and intuitive (seeing as we had to guess them all ) and the graphics are fairly decent. Can also pick this one up for fairly cheap. NHL Breakaway 98. I don't have this one on the Saturn (I have it on the n64) but its a fun game if you are not looking for a serious hockey game. The controls are really weird (mostly shooting) but when you can figure them out you can some great moves/fake shots. Also the graphics are pretty funny (colourful trails on the pucks etc) and come with some funky camera angles. And it has great music, some sweet organ mid game.

It's a shame Saturn never got a port of the Virtua Striker arcade machine.

NHL Breakaway 98. I don't have this one on the Saturn (I have it on the n64) Funny you mention this because it was advertised and announced for Saturn. Ads in gamepro had the Saturn logo on the bottom. I even own a retail display card for the Saturn version of NHL Breakaway 98 that would have been used at places like Toys R Us above the slips.

Recommendations for best basketball game on Saturn? I picked up NBA 97 for 99p off Ebay and its ok, plays quite nice although frame rate struggles a little. Great for nostalgia playing as the Jordan/Rodden/Pippen Bulls team. Although Jordan appears a '99 Roster Player' haha.

For the best basketball game on the Saturn pick up NBA Action 98' or NBA Jam T.E. You can't go wrong with either of those.

A little tip for NBA Live 97 is that you can make a real michael jordan and then swap "Roster Player" out of the Bulls to Free Agents and put your created Jordan in his place.
