I do think that this game looks gorgeous. And gameplay is very fluid. Lobotomy was able to pull a great convertion. They were even able to trick the Saturn into performing some REAL transparency effects (pick up the invisibility ring to see what I'm talking about).
Unfortunatly the target system is not as accurate as the PC version. Usually it takes more shots to kill an enemy, which also depends on the player's position. This make the game harder (even when you choose the easy difficult setting) I wasn't able to complete this version of Quake (I managed to get through the first 3 episodes but got stuck on the 4th, and got bored of trying to beat it).
Did any of you beat this game? How about gameplay issues?

I managed to complete it. One of my all time saturn favs. For me it beats Duke 3D since the saturn version of duke was clearly unfinished when released, however quake is far better which tells me lobotomy rushed duke to focus on quake.
It took me sometime to complete but I managed to do it! I really enjoyed the game overall. No gameplay iussues for me? except a sound glitch on level 2? when that auto birdge goes across to the key the sound keeps looping and looping even whenthe bridge is all the way across. the sound goesa away when you get further away from it but it still bugs me. Maybe its my copy of the game?

Don't know about that sound glitch, I'll try the game later today to check that.
Did you play the PC version? If yes, didn't you notice some lack of accuracy when using the shotgun? For instance, on the pc version ogres take 4 double shotgun shots to die . On the saturn, when shooting from the same distance, these guys take one or two more shots to die. Also, I didn't mention this, but they remove the cheats from the PAL version, so there's no level skiping or god mode, you have to play all the levels straight away if you want to see the ending.

yeah check this glitch for me see if its my copy... *sigh* i hope not also god mode IS in the pal version ;D I tried it and it works the words "Keith Mode" comes up. I cant say i tried the pc version much so for me my main experience of quake was from the saturn and in all honesty im more than happy with it. It's a FAR more solid and finished (as far as I know) port unlike the damn Duke 3D one.

Quake is one of my favourite Saturn games and I actually prefer it to the PC version. The targeting does seem a bit off sometimes but it's never really bothered me. The only things that bug me are the graphical glitches where polygons disappear or pass through each other. This doesn't happen all the time but it's still annoying.
Like others have said though, despite some flaws, Quake is much better than Duke Nukem.

Yes. That's true. The sound glitch you refered is also present on my version. Could you please post the god mode cheat for the PAL version?

Those cheats do not work in my version. The god mode cheat activates a "jevons control" mode (useless), and the others do nothing at all.
I do believe that those are cheats for the US version.

The jevons control mode is anything but useless, but you need the 3D pad to use it properly.

I believe the PAL 'God' cheat is R, R, L, R, Z, Y, X, Z, Y, X. You'll know if it's worked because it'll say 'Paul Mode' in the bottom right corner.

Ok, I found that over gamefaqs forum someone posted the God Mode code for the PAL version of Quake. Its almost the same , but you have to exchange the Ls and Rs. It goes like this: Paul (god) mode= Customise Controls then L, R, L, L, Z, Y, X, Z, Y, X I've tried it out and it work

Thread is so very, very old, that you may as well have started a new one. I'll do it for you now. ### THREAD LOCKED ### - Finally gave this a go last night. Spent two hours on it and still can't beat the first level of episode 1. Depressingly, it has the same problem as SNES Doom: enemies at a distance are so pixelated that they're indistinguishable from the backgrounds, yet they have no problems spotting the player character and dealing the same amount of damage as if they were attacking from point blank range. The blinding flash from the shotgun is pretty ridiculous, too; often I miss important visual cues because of it. I hate it when your worst enemy in the game is the bad graphics. Not as much as I hate it when the enemies in the first level take six shots each to bring down, though. That degree of tedium really saps my enthusiasm for the game, especially since it stands to reason that the first level is going to be the least tedious one, especially when you're dealing with an experienced developer like id. Wish I could think of something positive to offer, but I can't. The whole thing just feels like a watered-down mod of Doom. Heck, they even recycle the dog animations and barking sound from Wolfenstein 3D! I love W3D, but that's just depressing. Anybody know what the "Auto Targeting" option does? The manual doesn't say a word about it. Actually, it doesn't say a word about a lot of the game's most important aspects, but that's the only one I wasn't able to figure out.
