How many of you have played Sega world wide soccer 97&98 on the saturn?
Playing it again recently and there are moves the ai does that are not in the instruction manual. Step overs, jumping over tackles and a "flick up" move where they run and flick the ball over their head. Any ideas how to do these?

I think hold R or L and then do combinations with d-pad

I remember doing the over the head flick, that was cool. Haven't touched those games since 1998 so can't remember how though lol.

The instructions of how to perform the overhead flick were hidden in the "data burst" at the end of the UK television advertisement for Sega Worldwide Soccer '97:
P.S. I'd recommend watching this in high definition and full screen with the playback speed at its lowest possible setting...

I've always considered SWWS '97 better to play than its immediate successor, though I'm curious to know if the FIFA licensed World Cup '98 France: Road To Win offered any improvement. On the subject of Japanese-only sequels, Sega's official website has a page for '98 on the PC. Looking at the screenshots, it appears to be a significantly upgraded version compared to the Saturn original with far better graphics, including snow as one of its new variable weather options... I'd love to get my hands on this! Also, there was something called WWS Championship that seems to have only been released for the PC in America - my guess is that it's simply a translation of the aforementioned '98 PC edition, but I really need to investigate this series further beyond the initial two installments issued on the Saturn in PAL territories (for the record, I never liked the earlier sprite-based title known as International Victory Goal over here).

fifa 98 was a really good game, at least on psx. I heard the saturn version was a terrible port. fifa 98 was the first real good proper 3d fifa they did with good animations. world cup 98 however plays just the same as fifa 98, no improvements that I found escept world cup mode and history mode, but these weren't gameplay improvements.

Ahh.. Heel lift is up,down,up+B. I figured out the step over, double tap direction when moving. On game faqs they had it as up,down+B and it wasn't working at all I'll try this out later Jumping over tackles seems to be a bit random, but seems to happen more often if you tap left trigger to run as they slide in. I think it appears random as it maybe connected to your players stats. Good players seem to do it more often. I've picked up SWWS98 as I only owned the original before. Like the SSM review of it said, there is no difference really apart from the club teams in it. Its nice to play as the old 1997 Chelsea team with Vialli's bald head being represented I don't know why they didn't update the international teams in the game, but my old save file from SWWS97 was so extensively edited with the teams that if I want to play a world cup I'll just boot up that version of the game. Its a pity the goalkeepers are so crap in this game though! You can literally kick the ball through them sometimes. Its still pretty fun to play even now though.

You edited all the national teams in 97? could make a video of the names perhaps? you knew what players matched with the real ones? real skin color, hair etc

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any correlation between the international teams and the club teams in SWWS98. Eg, Alan Shearer is the best striker in the game, but all the England forwards stats bear no relation to his Newcastle Utd stats. So they are all just random players in both SWWS97 and 98. I think some of the international players are even named after the SSM editing staff and others from Sega Europe. So I edited the first 11 from a old Panini sticker album and some friends knowledge during a long school summer holidays. The only likenesses are in the club teams.

what I mean is in the dutch team there is a black striker (kluivert I suppose) and a white striker(bergkamp I suppose) did you name these correctly so kluivert wasn't white?

I forget exactly where some of these player names are found, but SWWS '97 includes a few staff members from Sega of Europe (including Andy Mee), the SSM editorial crew and even some of the original Japanese developers, plus the US testing department within its fictional teams.
