Hi everyone, I've been using a SCART to HDMI upscaler to record Saturn gameplay footage for about a year. Recently, my upscaler died and I got a new one. It runs Master System and Mega Drive games just fine, but when I try to run Saturn games I only get the audio and instead of the game I get this: Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

"order an OSSC"
huh, what an odd error message.

Does the upscaler run fine if you don't have the recording device hooked up? Long shot but it could be copy protection...
Is the new upscaler the same brand/model as the old one? If so, it could be a newer firmware that's incompatible with the Sega Saturn. If you have any other TVs or projectors around, try that out.
Finally, another stupid suggestion - could the newer upscaler be purposed for upscaling Japanese SCART rather than EuroSCART?
These might all be dumb questions but I often find when I run into problems it's because I've forgotten something silly.

Finally, another stupid suggestion - could the newer upscaler be purposed for upscaling Japanese SCART rather than EuroSCART? This made something occur to me: maybe it's a sync issue. If the upscaler you have only takes raw sync/C-sync (instead of using composite video as sync), and you have a PAL Saturn, which if I recall correctly doesn't output C-sync, that could be why you don't get a picture. Cables that use composite video as sync are usually more commonly found, but the MD can use C-sync pretty much no matter what region or console variation you have (SMS may be similar). On the flip side, if your upscaler for some reason doesn't support C-sync but you have an NTSC Saturn with a C-sync cable, then that could also be it. This is all based on the assumption that your cables are RGB and not just using SCART to transport composite or whatever.

It'd be kinda weird for one of those consumer grade scalers not to support composite video for sync. SCART cables wired using lean CSYNC is very rare in consumer gear.
My guess is the Saturn is too far off-spec refresh rate wise. Is it a PAL Saturn you 60hz modded?
(Actually though saying that the GBS-8200 scaler that was popular a few years back needs clean sync, since it was intended for industrial use e.g in coin ops)

I already returned the converter. It wasn't a new model though, I got it second hand. I was testing it on my PAL Saturn which has a 50hz to 60hz mod switch, but it didn't show image in either setting. I'll just order from the same brand as my previous converter. That one generally worked fine for capturing footage (it washes out the colors a bit and creates dithering effects in some games, but that's negligible). Thank you everyone!

Instead of buying disposable upscalers, why don't you just put the money aside? The games aren't going anywhere.

Budgetary constraints. They may be cheap and exposable, but they cost under 20 euro.

I understand they're cheap, but what if instead of spending that 20 euro immediately, you stash it away. And when you get another 20 euro, you do the same. Soon enough you're on the waiting list for an OSSC. Is the recording of games really so pressing that you can't wait?

I fully plan on getting an OSSC, it's just that I need a solution ASAP because I want to keep my youtube channel updated with content. When I can, I want to order one.
