Okay 3 big shumps this week. Will it be Batsugun, DoDonpachi or Blast Wind? As always pick the one you prefer or the one that most impressed you visually. BATSUGUNDODONPACHIBLAST WIND

Gotta be BATSUGUN, for the win. one of the best shooters on the Saturn. Great graphics, especially for an early game. Controls are super tight and gameplay is fast and challenging. Power ups are massive and needed to combat the early bullet hell style action. Special version is my favourite mode, with arranged soundtrack, some great tunes too.
Blastwind is right up there with some of the better shooters on the system, but is a little overrated by some, especially in terms of price. Really good gameplay, solid irem outing, even if vert shooters aren't their usual thing. Okay graphics, do the job, but there are much better elsewhere.
Dodonpachi is a top port and I think the Saturn version does a good job, even compared to PS1. one of my favourite series of shooters, the second game really packs loads in. great gameplay, rewarding players not using bombs, with extra points. another early bullet hell classic.

Haven't played the other two so haven't voted. DDP is one of the best shooters ever on any platform. Certainly on my top 5. I've played it on mame and I thoroughly enjoy the saturn port ...... but I only play it in tate mode with my rotated CRT. A truly great example of the genre.

I like the Blast Wind myself but like said it's my personal choice.

I have to go with Batsugun as for me it provides the best all round shooting experience. Fun to play without an ounce of slowdown. I love the special version mode and the arrange music always sticks in my head long after play.
Dodonpachi is okay but I'm not a fan of the slowdown. What kills it for me is its graphically so inferior. Some of the ships and explosions are so pixelated that it's off putting to play. The gameplay is top notch though.
Would like to play Blast Wind one day but at the moment it's out of my budget range.

In defence of GDP...the slowdown, as in a lot of cave games, is deliberate. It's part and parcel of the game design. The modern shooter genre relies on it quite a bit.
The graphics are rough but you really have to play it on tate. Even then there is pixellation on explosions and some enemies but Cave did a good enough job. Maybe it could have been built to use a ram cart but I suppose that was way before that was available?
