not too surprising, quite a few late games have FMVs that put the early stuff to shame, look at Burning Rangers, Lunar 2 , or the intro movies to Shining Force 3. . One of the worst examples Ive seen is Rampo , which was a very early , Japan only game, with video quality not much better than the Mega CD .
That said, that NHL does look pretty nifty, Im not personally a fan of the sport , but it certainly seems better than the EA offerings of the day.

Any FMV I have seen on Saturn has been extremely ropey with one exception - Body Special 264 - for obvious reasons.

Any FMV I have seen on Saturn has been extremely ropey with one exception - Body Special 264 - for obvious reasons. You need to check out Enemy Zero, Vatlva and Keriotosse. Also Titan Wars, Ghen war and Mr. Bones. All games with great FMV. Shinobi X amd Minnesota Fats Pool Legend also have good FMV but the accidental comedy elements in the plot make them laughable but in a good way.

I didn't seem to find out how to skate fast. looked it up in the manual but then switched over to the other games I bought steep slope sliders (holy shit that soundtrack!) and wipeout 2097. I got all 3 of them from a local shop for 40 euros. nhl all star 98 was 5 euros and I can almost never find that game on ebay!

Glad to hear it got better in later releases. Some of the stuff I have seen is headache inducing.
I rarely sit through any of it anyhow - even intro sequences. The sort of game that forces me to watch FMV soon gets ditched as I'm not really into narrative led stuff.
It never really impressed me as a technical thing. I guess because of its non-interactive nature. I can even remember wondering what all the fuss was about when Dragon's Lair hit the arcades. That was 1983 - I was 16-17 then. Star Wars arcade came out the same year - that was more impressive as far as I was concerned.

the difference between the first Lunar (not the MPEG version) and Lunar 2 is quite something, it went from a blocky, dull FMV that wasn't even full screen ,to a full screen FMV with better colour and less artefacts. Still not quite up to the level of the Playstations MJPEG but certainly not that far off either.
alot of the early Saturn releases have FMVs that look alot like 3DO releases, they too were often not full screen and fairly blocky, although still better than the MegaCD content.

And your right, easily one of the hardest saturn games to come across.

What's Wipeout 2097 like on Saturn? Does it support the analogue controller?

What's Wipeout 2097 like on Saturn? Does it support the analogue controller? Wipeout 2097 does support the 3D controller so it controls quite well , in terms of visuals it looks very good although missing some of the visual flair from the PS1 (the kind of stuff one would expect), in terms of frame rate its ok , but not as smooth or fast as the PS1 original. It also has a different soundtrack. overall its a pretty good port by 3rd party standards, though the original version is probably still preferable.

Wipeout2097 is 100xs better than the original Wipeout. The original was truly awful and has a choppy frane rate and suffers from glitches and minor slowdown. 2097 is smooth with next to no pop up, zero graphical glitches, superior draw distance and puts alot of other Saturn racers to shame. I don't remember any slowdown either. It's a graphical masterpiece and one of the best examples of 3D on the Saturn. Also controls brilliantly with the Arcade steering wheel.

What's Wipeout 2097 like on Saturn? Does it support the analogue controller? yes it works with 3d controller and the game looks excellent. I haven't seen the psx version in 20 years though, but I doubt the saturn version looks (much) worse than the psx version. a night and day difference with the first wipeout on the saturn, which wasn't good and made saturn look bad compared to psx.
