Wonder-inc from SegaNet told me about this glitch when I was talking about buying the US version of V.R. and he said: "No matter what. Do not buy the PAL version of Virtua Racing on Saturn." "That version of the game comes with a bug that can wipe out your entire backup cartridge save data."
if anyone has more info on this bug let me know.

He also Said: "No problem. And yeah I know of it cause it happened twice with me. And to make matters worse it's not documented like at all."

I don't know any specifics about such a bug, but:
- The JP and PAL versions are IDENTICAL. The data track is the exact same for both discs. The USA one is, I think a little later.
- I know I played the PAL version on emulators, and it did not affect my saves. This could be either because emulators are not affected, or because I didn't get to trigger that specific bug.
- I know I played one version on my console too, but I'm unsure if it was PAL or USA... and again, I might not have played it long enough to trigger this bug.
- ANY GAME can end up deleting your cart, if the cart slot fails connection at a critical point. This happened to me once with Thunder Force V, of all games.
So, I've had backup-cart-destroying bugs occur while playing other games, but I cannot confirm if Virtua Racing has any specific bugs or not that destroys backup carts.
I suppose this doesn't reassure you one bit.

"The way this bug works is that if you try to go to Grand Prix mode and save to the backup cartridge/save with a backup cartridge inserted I can't remember which of these 2 caused it. The game would crash and if you reset the system all of the data on there will be erased." that's more info on the problem but I see, thanks for the info

I suppose I can fire up an emulator to test that.

It doesn't erase anything on an emulator. I'm not quite ready to test it on my real save carts yet, as I don't have a spare one to sacrifice, but I'd put my bets on the cart slot connector failing when that guy made his save.

I played the complete grand prix mode (PAL version) with the backup cartridge, all my saves games are still intact, lucky me I can not test it, but I think the game is region free.

Virtua Racing on the Saturn is indeed region free, and I've never had a problem with my PAL copy saving or loading from the cartridge in all the years I've owned this. However, both Theme Park and the (already-documented) Preview Vol. 1 demo disc have previously wiped saves on my official Backup Memory, so I play these without the device inserted...
