Hey there
well, I'm new here .... so don't hate me for being at dumb-ass level when it comes to the guts of the 'ol indestructible ....
here's my problem .... I've had my Saturn for decades .... since around '96-'97 ....somewhere in there .... I forget ... the ganja was amazing back then .... anyways ... its an MK-80000 .... a launch box ....its got the oval buttons and the access light ....well after stashing away for some time... I lost the A/v connector for it ....in recent times, retro stores have popped up around me.... I was able to procure an s-video cable for it ... so I pulled it out to use it again .... everything was good ... I even fixed the rat-chewed in half cord on my controller .... everything was good ...until .... I dumb-ass-ingly knocked over an entire bowl of cereal milk ON TOP of it ... oops.... I completely panicked like I killed a puppy .... hoping for the best, but expecting the worst ....
well, long story short ... I took it apart and cleaned it ....dried it out ....it still boots up and everything .... but for some reason, the CD motor no longer spins ... I've surmised that its just fu*ked and prolly died (the motor anyway) ...it reads 'drive empty' when I put a disc in .... apart it doesn't even spin when I hold the door switch to 'check disc format' .... it does that but nothing else....
I visited my retro shop today ... which also repairs consoles ... they have a computer repair place a few doors down from the retro game shop .... I was able to garner a new CD assembly on the cheap-o today .... its a JVC exl-p605 .... the tech pulled it from a gen 2 system .... the one I originally had in my Saturn is an exl-p604 ....
IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCES ....AND CAN THESE BE SWAPPED SUCCESSFULLY???
....I did try to do this ...I fired up my unit once I plugged the connections into the new(er) assembly .... I have it splayed out on my workbench in order to tinker with it ... it fired it up and it did everything it was supposed to... home the laser and spin the disc .... EXCEPT recognize that I put a GAME disc on the platten .... it came up as a CD ..... with 2 tracks ...
I DID notice that some of the components are different on the 605 compared to the 604 ...
I see 2 POTS up in the northwest corner on the 604 .... the 605 the taller metal POT is in a different place ...
there are some IC chips on the 604 that aren't on the 605 .... etc
*** the one thing I took note of is that the ORANGE pot on the laser pickup assembly is in a different position ...
on the exl-p605 (new-er) ... the stamped numbers are in about the 3 o'clock position .... on the 604 (mine) ..... the numbers look to be at about the 1:30 position .... almost a 45 degree angle ....pointing toward the top right corner of the case of the pot ...... does this control the CD speed I honestly don't know dick about any of this stuff ... so I'm asking for some help ...
whats my problem?? Shouldn't this work and the assembly read my game CD's?? Is it not spinning fast enough ?? WTF am I doing wrong??
anyone?? ...... Bueller ?? ..... Bueller ?

( *** PS : I want to TRY to fix this unit before I just give up on it ... and buy a replacement ... they have some .... and I was told that I could bring the assembly back for a refund/credit IF it didnt't work ... I kinda don't want to admit defeat ....YET .... *** )
