Hi all, a somewhat delayed newbie post here... I posted my custom PAL covers over in the Lightgun Alley section a few months ago, and it looks like I'll need to up my post count to add some more!

An overview of my Saturn journey for those interested...
My Sega experience began in 2022 when I finally got a Dreamcast after a few years of curiosity. I had never really given the Saturn much thought until then (usually dismissing it as a failed competitor to the PlayStation), but as I became familiar with Sega's history, the Saturn became more and more intriguing to me.
The way I ended up getting my Saturn was maybe the most fateful of any of my consoles. I was eventually at the stage of going back and forth in my mind for months as to whether I should get one, constantly weighing up if there were enough games to make it worth my while and the cost it would all take. In July of 2023, a new collectibles store opened in my tiny home town, and when I made my first trip, lo and behold - the first Saturn I had seen at retail for years, and in great boxed condition too. I gave it a week to think it over, and once I was certain, I came back to purchase it. The shop owner told me he had literally just sold it on eBay... But that he preferred to sell in-store, so he instead sold it to me! If I had been even a day later, I might not have gotten a Saturn at all.
6 months later, I'm very happy with my purchase. I've had my console region, FRAM and refresh rate modded, and I've got a 3D Control Pad and Arcade Racer keeping my Model 2 controller company. I have a small collection of fun to excellent games, having bought pretty much everything in the library that I've enjoyed when experimenting through CD-R backups. Looks like it's all here to stay!

Ya sorry about that. We put a minimum post count on the rest of the forum to try and limit all the spam posts we are getting. Also, dam snagged that saturn from the ebayer! arcade racer is one of the best controllers ever imo

Welcome! We need more people to keep forums alive, though something tells me inevitably Discord is going to do something bad to generate more revenue and who knows they might see a comeback. Custom covers are always fun in my opinion, in these days of inflated prices and chancers on ebay people should display your games however they damn well want Is the Arcade Racer really that good? I've always overlooked it tbh...

When I saw the spam posts I was afraid for a moment, but it's great to see measures have been put in place to keep things clear. Welcome! I've always overlooked it tbh... Thank you! Yeah I'm also much more invested in forums, I think I have a Discord account but I never tend to use it. It'll be a real shame if forums die out completely, they're such a great centre for community and information. The other benefit I've found with my custom art is that I'm less inclined to seek out complete copies of games - almost half of my Saturn games have been bought disc-only, which has saved me a tonne of money. Nice to give these discs a home too. The Arcade Racer is a funny one. I had been using a modded Race Controller for the Dreamcast prior to getting mine, so the Arcade Racer felt like an undeniable downgrade (smaller, digital-only acceleration and braking, no capacity for vibration). I will say though that Saturn software doesn't have the default deadzone enforced that so much Dreamcast software suffers from with a wheel, so you're more likely to get great steering accuracy when playing Saturn games with the Arcade Racer. I'd say that OutRun, Hang On GP and particularly F1 Challenge are essential to play with a wheel, Daytona Circuit Edition, Sega Rally Plus and Virtua Racing are pretty great with one, and the original Daytona USA and Sega Rally are disappointing with one.

I’m liking the 3D pad for driving games, works nicely with hang on, improving things greatly, people whinge about the handling , but it’s better with the 3D pad. Same goes for Manx tt, which is a better game than hang on… looks great as well. Have you played that yet?
welcome to the forum mate, you’ll find we are actually a nice bunch.

Yeah Hang On GP is much better with the analog options. I actually think the reverse about Hang On GP and Manx! I tried Manx with everything and found I just couldn't get into it, and much preferred Hang On. I haven't played the original arcade version of Manx though, maybe that would change my mind.

The arcade smashes any of the ports, but that’s true in most cases. I remember the cabs, the sit down racers.. loved them. Think the last time I saw one was maybe the arcade in the Trafford centre. I keep meaning to go to arcade club in bury, they have loads of them.
