I'm having a strange issue where my Saturn will not load JPN region burned discs. It keeps giving me a "Checking disc format" message shortly after the game loads. Yes, the games begin to load. In some cases I can see the developer/publisher logos before the message comes up.
I have a model 1 NTSC Saturn (with the oval buttons) and an action replay cartridge flashed with psuedo saturn kai.
My system plays ALL other games that I have just fine so I know it's not my console. It plays NTSC retail and burned games, and it plays all the retail JPN region games that I have as well..
I have never tried playing backup Japanese region games before until now. The person who sent me these copies is on the same setup as me (NTSC model 1 Saturn, Pseudo Saturn Kai action replay) and the discs work for them.
I noticed that the boot screen on Psuedo Saturn Kai (right after you select start game) says "Region: North America" or something along those lines... Could that be why? Do I need to change the region of my psuedo saturn cart somehow or my console itself? Are there versions of Psuedo Saturn that only run NTSC backup discs or what am I missing here that is causing this problem?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I am aware the later versions of Kai have zero compatibility issues. Off the top of my head, this could be corrupted roms you burned, or you have burned them incorrectly. The best results are from directly copying an original Saturn game, especially if you are unfamiliar with burning roms onto CD.

I didn't burn them myself. I have a friend with an etsy shop. The same copies work on their console with the same setup though, so if it was an issue with the ROM's or the burning process, wouldn't it give them the same problem?

Given everything you have said, that it works fine with ntscu and originals from all regions. It has to be a problem with your pseudo Saturn cart… It should run everything. I’m stumped.

I feel like the Pseudo Saturn boot screen for a Japanese game should Say "Region: Japan" not "Region: North America"..? Or am I wrong about that?

Yeah, it should state the region of the game being loaded. There are games that have compatibility issues also, but o don’t think it’s that, ketei densetsu outrun etc, will only play on certain consoles, even if original copies, some chipsets are fussy.

So when I got home from work I decided to mess with this again and looked at the bottom of the discs this person sent me..
I’m not sure when/how they tested their stuff before they sent it out, but there’s a circular scuff all across the bottom of their discs, and what looks like some kinda residue.. I would post pics but i’m not seeing an option to do that on my phone at least?
Pretty sure that would cause this.. Looks like it might be from whatever machine they’re using to apply the labels?
