Dude, I'm so with you. I almost get offended when I see videogame shops because of all that nextgen crap. My g/f is not into videogames at all, but she loooves FFX or FFXI because she played that a lot at a friend's or an ex's or whatever so she keeps bugging me about me holding on to this old obscure console no one in Sweden but me knows about (not really, but you get the picture). But I stand my ground. Woman can't keep me from ridiculously expensive and (to her) anti-entertaining Saturn collecting. Games were better back then. The easthetical values, the fun and the limitations that made developers innovative is gone. I owned the Dreamcast, loved it, and lost it (long story how). That was an acceptable console. But nothing worthwile console-wise has come out since the end of the 90's or maybe the early 00's according to me.
But it might be a personal issue of mine; I only play PC games made 1993-1999 as well. With some random early 2000's exceptions (Republic: The Revolution, UFO: Aftermath and Disciples II was OK for example).
I don't think it's an age issue either because even though I'm born in '84 and therefore got "schooled" in gaming 1990-1998-something, my friends still just stand there mouths open, gulping down the fancy-ass soulless crap the market feeds them. I own a GBA, just for Gunstar Future Heroes, that's true. But that's the only exception. I might buy a DS one day if they get super-cheap just to play some retro RPG's (wich the PC emulation is good for though; I love FFV, Chrono Trigger and FFVI).
Another thing worth to mention: I'm not a "real" retro player either. 8-bit formats doesn't intrigue me the slightest, and not so much 16-bit either. It's the mid to late 90's I love. And only the mid to late 90's.

I have to disagree with warlok a bit, you can't say games were more innovative back then because lets face it they weren't. Compared to games like Portal, little big planet, Oblivion, GTA4 the games of yesteryear start to look a bit shallow, but they should considering the budget on a lot of modern games.
However that is the exact reason I have found myself drawn to these old classics, I enjoy a lot of the archetype's that have since been completely phased out. I am talking mainly about 2D side scrolling beat em' ups.
The main thing I dislike about current gen consoles (don't get me wrong I own a PS3) is the multiplayer which ofcourse has technically improved along with the rise of the internet. But its the lack of multiplayer that requires mulitap's. That big mess of wires, the shouting, the taunts and the shoving. The experience of playing a 10 player Saturn bomberman is clearly never going to be beaten by any game on the current gen consoles.
Perhaps I am just mixing up sentimentality with the actual technical achievements and playability of games but is that really such a bad thing.

When it comes to Saturn hardware, it is rock solid in terms to quality, even though it was quite challenging to program for. ;D The Saturn controller is the best! It's sad that many nextgen consoles today are WEAK and hold no light to Saturn when it comes to quality. What a waste of your investment. The nextgen systems freeze during extended game play resulting in the board to fry. The 'red ring of death' , 'yellow light of death' or 'frozen screen of death' is non existent to SATURN. I have played my Saturn over 10 plus hours on many occasions and it still works like a dream. It always reads game discs and plays music CD like it did on day 1. For a console that is is 15 years old, that says alot. Simply put - SEGA SATURN OWNS! Yes, there may be more library of games out for newer consoles, but Saturn had games that scream quality. When I match up quality software with solid quality hardware - the right choice is clear. SATURN FTW! ;D

I decided to hold off on a 'current gen' purchase as I still had too many games I wanted to play and finish from the DC, PS2, XBox era. It also helps that none of the current machines remotely engage me. I was erring more towards the Wii, however, the absolute lack of more than 10 games that I'd like to play has put me off buying that. Other than a Blu-Ray drive there's nothing to interest me on PS3. The 360 has the big selling point of Live, however, I don't have the internet at home. I'll stick to playing my favourite games on the Saturn, and (cheaply) completing the games from the 'last' generation.
Oh, and Warlock: you enjoyed Republic the Revolution? It was a great concept, I'll give it that...

My Saturn is the only console I own. I have PC too I guess but my Saturn is my main source of gaming entertainment.
I do enjoy playing the odd new game but there a few things I find which make people seem to be more into the retro market
1. Graphics don't make games. It's a fact. No matter how much you debate it with people, the graphics do not mean a thing. Yes they can help immerse you into a game however just because one port of a game doesn't have bump mapping and shaders doesn't mean it isn't as fun or as good as the less graphically impressive port. No one cares in that department.
2. Graphics are now SO realistic (Well, almost anyway), that game are somewhat boring in the main stream area. All games now are over the top FPS action with uber realistic graphics. Now while it may be immersive (To an experience) it's not enough, which leads me to my next point,
3. No imagination or creativity. Sure there are one or two exceptions but lets face it, if i want to walk through a forest with realistic graphics I'll go outside and do it. Every game has the same look. How many FPS have you played this generation which all look the same and play the same? How mny racers have the same graphics and gameplay with barely any variation? How many titles have you seen rebranded and remade every single year with barely any significant changes or updates?
too damn many thats how many!!
Games of the olden generations (not just saturn but all of them) showed a lot of imaginartion and creativity in what they were. One example is NiGHTS. Not just because it's a saturn title, I'm talking about the software itself, not what it's for. The gameplay is just magical for something so simple. The imagination in the way the world looks, the colours and everything really just takes you to a whole new place.
Other great examples are things like Zelda on the SNES and so on. No relaistic graphics but the gameplay was so solid, everything was balanced and it was colourful and lovely to look at.
5. Games theres days rely too much on realism and graphics (as I've already mentioned). Sure everyone likes a game to be "somehwhat" realisctic but my point is that gamea feel more like a chore these days to me and many many others.
The olden days of plug the game in and just have a quick go are long gone for the most part. I mean nothing to me beats the fun of popping a game in to have a bash for 10 mins and in those 10 mins I have the ride of my life and love every moment. Such as classic arcade racers, mario kart on snes (the new one on wii is very good too actually), Sega Rally? Daytona? Ridge Racer? (The 1st PSX one).
Another thing I dislike is the whole online world regarding consoles. On PC I haven't had any problems with it myself but on things like xbox live where you hear little kids swearing and acting the way they do because they play the game so much they know it inside out? Why should I pay money for a game and online service and be treated in such a way? Or be abused because you legitimately one against someone else who has a serious problem against losing?
It's really pathetic when you think about it.
For me , the best multiplayer gaming I have ever had in all my life was back when I was playing with people next to me. Playing games on the megadrive like Alien Storm, Streets of Rage... and al l the others. There's just something about being with your best friends or family and playing a game together, sounds silly but working together towards a goal can even add to your relationship and bonding. Sound over the top? Well I don't think so.
With everything said though, I do enjoy the odd game here and there such as the new mario kart game on wii, resident evil titles (although 5 was great in story it really sucked for being a rehash of 4 to be honest) and some other new pc titles (which are L4D2 and Killing floor as i like multiplayer co op titles on pc mainly). But there's something magical to me about the games of the yesteryears. The music, the gameplay even the graphics get me excited.
For my there's nothing better than putting a game of Daytona USA CCE and playing 2 players with that fantastic rock soundtrack ripping through. None of this mass produced hip hop/rnb/dance crap which is just polluting our airwaves in the UK.
GOSH I've ranted for ages eh? Oh well, I'm sure many of you here will agree with my views though.

I own a lot of machines, but as I've said on here loads of times, my Saturns get the most attention.
